About Summerfest

Affectionately dubbed "The Big Gig," Summerfest is a monumental music festival in the heart of downtown Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Founder and former Milwaukee Mayor Henry W. Maier was inspired by a visit to Oktoberfest in Munich, and he set out to bring a similar communal celebration to his city. The name "Summerfest" encapsulates the essence of what he envisioned—a grand gathering of epic proportions with a focus on music, culture, and community under vibrant summer skies.

Held annually at Henry Maier Festival Park, the event has been a cornerstone of music and cultural celebration since its inception in 1968. With a rich history spanning over half a century, it showcases a staggering lineup of over 800 acts performing more than 1,000 shows across 11 days. This draws approximately 800,000 people from all corners of the globe to the shores of Lake Michigan each year. The festival is also known for its food vendors, interactive activities, art displays, and giant Ferris wheel.

Summerfest Moments That Made Headlines

Summerfest has been the backdrop for countless performances that resonate far beyond the grounds. It’s a place where headlines and legends have been made, and the unforgettable experiences stick with audiences long after they head home. These particular examples have been among the most talked-about events in the festival’s history:

  • 1970: Sly & the Family Stone's landmark performance at Summerfest wasn't just about the music; it was a test of patience, logistics, and sheer crowd management. Drawing an audience upwards of 100,000, the festival faced an unexpected challenge in accommodating such a massive turnout. Sly's hesitance to perform for such a vast crowd led to a dramatic standoff, resolved only by dispatching three limousines to ensure his presence on stage. This event not only tested the festival's infrastructure but also highlighted its potential to draw massive crowds, setting a precedent for future editions.

  • 1987: The opening of the Marcus Amphitheater with a headline performance by the Beach Boys signified a pivotal moment for Summerfest, catapulting it into a new league. This wasn't just about a new stage; it was about transforming the festival into a premier venue capable of hosting the biggest names in music. The amphitheater's debut, celebrated by a sold-out crowd, marked a shift towards more ambitious programming and a better audience experience, underlining the festival's evolution into a must-visit music destination.

  • 2015: The Rolling Stones' decision to include Summerfest on their selective North American tour was a historic nod to the festival's growing prestige. This performance was iconic not just for the Stones' choice of the relatively intimate Marcus Amphitheater but also for the frenzied ticket sales, with passes selling out in minutes and fetching astronomical prices on resale markets. This event underscored Summerfest's capability to host legendary acts, offering fans a once-in-a-lifetime concert experience within the festival's bounds.

  • 2016: The pairing of Alabama Shakes and Chris Stapleton brought together two of the music industry's most powerful voices on Summerfest's largest stage, creating a night of soulful melodies and raw, emotional performances. This unique lineup blended the gritty soul of Brittany Howard with the heartfelt country of Chris Stapleton, showcasing Summerfest's commitment to musical diversity and its ability to curate memorable, genre-spanning shows that resonate with a wide audience.

  • 2017: P!nk's performance at Summerfest was more than a concert; it was an acrobatic, high-flying extravaganza that captivated everyone in attendance. Her decision to incorporate aerial stunts into her show, flying over the audience while belting out hits, set a new standard for live performances at the festival. This night was emblematic of Summerfest's status as a venue where artists can push the boundaries of traditional concert experiences, creating unforgettable moments for their fans.
