About 21 Savage

21 Savage's journey into music was not your typical road to fame. Born in London and raised in Atlanta, Georgia, Shéyaa Bin Abraham-Joseph’s childhood was rife with crime and conflict. He spent a lot of time on the streets and was put on probation for gun possession in seventh grade. His “right-hand man” was killed when he was a teen, and in 2013, on his 21st birthday, he was shot six times by rival gang members and lost his best friend during an attempted robbery.

He began to transform his tales of crime, violence, and survival into lyrics, establishing his distinctive voice and setting the foundation for a meaningful career. His friend’s uncle gave him money for studio time, and he released his debut single, “I Can’t Get Enough.” In March of 2014, his young brother died in a shooting following an attempted drug deal, but the determined artist continued, releasing an EP and two mixtapes in 2015, officially making his mark on the music scene.

His critical and commercial breakthrough came a year later when he worked with Metro Boomin on the EP Savage Mode, introducing his deep voice and autobiographical lyrics to a wider audience. This success was amplified by other high-profile collaborations, including "Bartier Cardi" with Cardi B. in 2018 and “Wish Wish” with DJ Khaled in 2019. "Rockstar" with Post Malone and "Jimmy Cooks" with Drake were his first number-one singles on the US Billboard Hot 100.

The albums I Am > I Was, Savage Mode II with Metro Boomin, and Her Loss with Drake, as well as his 2024 solo effort American Dream, have all reached number one on the Billboard 200. Countless other chart-topping hits have followed, but perhaps his most significant musical achievement to date was his recognition by the Recording Academy of the United States for his single "A Lot," featuring J. Cole, which won him his first Grammy Award.

Beyond the studio and stage, 21 Savage is renowned for his humanitarian and philanthropic efforts, particularly his work promoting financial literacy among youth. His "21 Savage Bank Account Campaign" and the launch of a free online financial literacy education program during the pandemic underscored his commitment to giving back to the community. These efforts, along with his artistry, have earned him respect both inside and outside the music world.

Live Moments That Made Headlines

21 Savage has an innate ability to connect with his audience. He has delivered honest performances that have not only entertained but also made headlines. Each live show is a testament to his artistry, energy, and the powerful message he brings, making every performance a noteworthy event. These shows have stood out:

  • March 31, 2017: Kicking off his Issa tour in Houston, 21 Savage made a dramatic entrance at the House of Blues wearing a Jason Voorhees mask and flaunting two machetes, setting the tone for a night of "murder music." The tour name, and very possibly the props, paid homage to his infamous “Issa” Internet meme, launched when he was asked what his cross tattoo represented and he responded, “Issa knife.”

  • August 20, 2018: 21 Savage and Post Malone delivered a memorable rendition of "rockstar” at the MTV Video Music Awards, the former wearing all black, a stark contrast to Posty’s happy face onesie. 21 Savage's mainstream appeal was on full display as the audience erupted when he walked onto the stage. His Song of the Year win earlier that evening had him in high spirits, but he maintained his signature stoic style when he delivered his lyrics.

  • August 23, 2019: While playing for the Rockets, NBA All-Star James Harden hosted his third annual Friends Celebrity Concert at Revention Music Center in Houston. The event raises money for his charitable foundation and is known for its secret special guests, and this particular occasion included 21 Savage, Maxo Kream, Slim Thug, Meek Mill, YG, and Travis Scott. 21 Savage had the audience engaged from the first line of “No Heart” to the last line of “A Lot.”

  • April 14, 2023: After a surprise appearance at the Revolve Festival, 21 Savage shocked the Coachella crowd when he crashed Metro-Boomin’s set. As he casually strolled onto the stage after John Legend, Future, and Don Toliver, fans went wild! He lit into “Runnin,” “Bank Account,” “No Heart,” and “10 Freaky Girls” before debuting “Umbrella.” Then, for the grand finale, he joined Metro-Boomin, Diddy, and The Weeknd for a live debut of a killer “Creepin’” remix.

  • July 24, 2023: Taking a break from his "It’s All a Blur" tour with Drake, 21 Savage conquered Rolling Loud Miami for the second time. His sensational set opened with “Red Opps” before G Herbo joined him for a live collaboration of Nardo Wick’s “Who Want Smoke??” As if that weren’t enough, he brought out Young Nudy for “Peaches & Eggplants” and “EA.” Fans rapped right along with the hip-hop superstar until he closed out the show with “Rich Flex.”

  • February 24, 2024: After an SNL fake-out in 2022, 21 Savage really was the musical guest on Saturday Night Live, and he did not disappoint. In support of his third album, American Dream, he performed “redrum” his first time out. Then, he treated fans to a medley of “should’ve wore a bonnet,” featuring smooth vocals from Brent Faiyaz, and a duet of “Prove It” with platinum-selling singer-songwriter Summer Walker.
