About Jerry Seinfeld

Jerry Seinfeld has been on the comedy scene for over four decades. Born in Brooklyn, New York, he caught the bug while attending  Queens College, testing his material at open-mic nights throughout the city. Influenced by Jean Shepherd, George Carlin, and Richard Pryor, he began to make a name for himself, delivering thoughts on life, social norms, and personal relationships.

In 1976, an appearance at a New York City club called Catch a Rising Star got him a spot on a Rodney Dangerfield HBO special. Before long, he had landed a role on the hit sitcom Benson, playing a mail carrier with comedy routines no one wanted to hear. His character was written out after only three episodes, but the wheels were still in motion.

He caught his biggest break in 1981, when he took his act to The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson and was catapulted into the limelight. Doors began to open more frequently, and he and Larry David began to workshop a “show about nothing” for NBC. Seinfeld took the world by storm! It ran for nine seasons, earned 38 awards, and is considered one of the most successful series of all time.

Since the finale of his famous sitcom, Jerry Seinfeld has continued to explore everyday topics in his stand-up, with specials like Jerry Before Seinfeld and 23 Hours to Kill. He also developed Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee, a talk show that featured him engaging in candid interviews set in classic cars. His efforts have already earned him an array of accolades, and he shows no signs of stopping.

Jerry Seinfeld’s Comedic Collaborations

Seinfeld has shared the stage and screen with numerous funny folks, from rising stars to established legends. These encounters have added new dimensions to his material and have helped make him a master of various media. Some of his most notable collaborations include the following:

  • Larry David: David was the co-creator of Seinfeld and the inspiration for the George Costanza character. He won a Primetime Emmy for his writing on “The Contest,” and made several uncredited cameos. Additionally, Seinfeld appeared with David on Curb Your Enthusiasm on multiple occasions, and Larry was Jerry’s first guest on Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee.

  • Kathy Griffin: Kathy Griffin brought her talents to Seinfeld in two episodes. In “The Cartoon,” which aired in 1996, she portrayed Sally Weaver, a struggling actress and comedienne who turns her frustrations with Jerry into a one-woman cable TV special entitled Jerry Seinfeld is the Devil. Two years later, in “The Doll,” Sally returns, proving she’s still a thorn in his side.

  • Tina Fey: In 2007, Jerry appeared as himself in the “SeinfeldVison” episode of Tina Fey’s show 30 Rock. He finds out that NBC wants to digitally insert him into every current program and goes to the studio to confront Jack Donaghy, the VP of East Coast Television. In 2014, Fey returned the favor years later when she was interviewed on Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee.

  • Chris Rock: Seinfeld and Chris Rock have been friends for years. In 2007, Rock lent his voice to Mooseblood the Mosquito in Bee Movie, an animated film Seinfeld starred in, co-wrote, and produced. Then, in a 2014 episode of Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee, they talked about hosting the Oscars, stand-up’s golden age, Steve Martin, discovering talent, Cardi B, and more.

  • Brian Regan: Aside from hosting two interviews with Brian Regan on Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee, Jerry Seinfeld was a huge help in the development of his career. He always encouraged him to have a show, and even produced Standup and Away! With Brian Regan in 2018. Regan credits him as “the muscle” who got his series greenlit at Netflix.

  • Jim Gaffigan: In 2016, Seinfeld appeared in an episode of The Jim Gaffigan Show and Gaffigan was interviewed on Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee. In 2023, the two co-headlined four markets on the “Barely Alive” tour. When asked about Jerry on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, Gaffigan quipped, “You probably don’t know who he is. He’s got something. I feel like America would like him.”
