About Beach Boys

The Beach Boys embarked on their musical journey in 1961. The band was made up of brothers Brian, Dennis, and Carl Wilson, their cousin Mike Love, and friend Al Jardine. Hailing from Hawthorne, California, a Los Angeles city minutes from Manhattan Beach, they quickly became associated with surf rock, even though only one member (Dennis) was able to ride waves.

Their early music, characterized by complex harmonies and pop melodies, catapulted them to fame. They scored several #1 singles, including "I Get Around" and "Help Me, Rhonda” and nine of their albums sold over a million copies. Additionally, they helped pioneer the concept album. Although the critically acclaimed Pet Sounds was not their biggest commercial success, it is widely considered a musical masterpiece.

Their talents have been recognized with a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award, a Kids’ Choice Award, an American Music Award, a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, and a well-deserved induction into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. The Beach Boys won their first Grammy for "Good Vibrations" in the Best Rock Vocal Performance by a Duo or Group category.

With their enduring legacy and ongoing tours, they continue to capture the essence of a bygone era while remaining relevant in the contemporary music scene. Their influence persists, not only in the music they created but in the waves they made in the industry. Fans can expect the group to continue celebrating their rich history, keeping the spirit of their classic sound alive for new generations to discover and enjoy.

Live Moments That Made Headlines

The Beach Boys have had many memorable moments on stage, including a few that transcended the boundaries of music. The following performances marked pivotal points in their musical odyssey:

  • July 3, 1963: America’s Band helped celebrate Independence Day with a concert at the Hollywood Bowl. It was their first appearance at the venue, and they have returned to the stadium several times, including another 4th of July celebration in 2023, with special guests John Stamos and Mark McGrath.

  • January 15, 1964: The Beach Boys took their first trip outside of the U.S. when they traveled to Australia and New Zealand for a two-week tour. They opened in Brisbane, and The Brisbane Courier Mail reported that “Festival Hall last night nearly lost its roof…after what was the wildest show it has ever had.”

  • June 1, 1975: Producer and Beach Boys bass player Jim Guerico convinced Chicago to tour with their California counterparts. Each Beachago show included an hour of the Beach Boys, an hour of Chicago, and then a combined set. It kicked off at Chicago Stadium and was billed as the must-see summer tour of 1975.

  • July 4, 1985: The Beach Boys headlined Sea To Shining Sea, a free show in front of Philadelphia’s Museum of Art that also included the Oak Ridge Boys, Joan Jet & The Blackhearts, Jimmy Page, Christopher Cross, The Neville Brothers, and other performers. Then, they traveled to D.C. for a second concert in the evening!

  • April 24, 2012: The band kicked off their 50th-anniversary tour at the Anselmo Valencia Amphitheater in Tucson, Arizona. It was the first time Brian Wilson had been on stage with them since 1982, and opened with “Do It Again.” The song had been a staple since 1968, but this time, the lyrics were undoubtedly more meaningful: “I've been thinking ‘bout all the places we've surfed and danced and all the faces we've missed. So, let's get back together and do it again.”
