The History of Los Angeles Chargers Football

The Chargers were established in Los Angeles in 1960 and quickly proved themselves a force to be reckoned with in the American Football League. A move to San Diego in 1961 set the stage for a memorable story, and with quarterback John Hadl at the helm from 1962–1972, they clinched multiple division titles.

One highlight of those early years was that head coach Don Coryell introduced the world to the "Air Coryell'' offense. Based on Sid Gillman's deep pass offense, it required consistent coverage of the entire field, thereby putting wide receivers, tight ends, and running backs in nearly constant motion.

With this shift, the Chargers soon became known for their high-flying, dynamic style of play. They made the postseason four times during Coryell's tenure. In the 1963 AFL Championship, running back Keith Lincoln gained 349 yards of total offense, which set a record that still stands.

After a dry spell for most of the ‘70s, the '80s saw a resurgence with Dan Fouts and Kellen Winslow leading the charge. The "Epic in Miami” playoff match in 1981 remains the stuff of legend. It gave spectators over 82 minutes of intense football, and the image of Kellen Winslow being helped off the gridiron, exhausted and dehydrated, shows the toll the hard-fought battle took on the players.

In 1992, Bobby Ross took a Chargers team that had gone 0–4 at the start of the season to the divisional playoff game. In 1994-95, they made it to the Super Bowl but lost to the San Francisco 49ers. Still, this cemented the reputation of the club as a perennial contender, and the squad saw the playoffs again the following year.

Throughout the 21st century, they’ve made several postseason appearances. Even without a slew of Super Bowl trophies to their name, these guys have consistently found ways to deliver. The franchise returned to Los Angeles in 2017, and the organization is poised for an exciting future. Be part of it! Find your tickets now, and get ready to join like-minded fans in a sea of blue and gold as they cheer on the Chargers!

The Chargers Football Schedule

Before you gear up and make your way to the stadium, you’ll need to identify the matchups you’ll most want to attend. Not all games are created equal, so finding the showdown you want to see most is the first step to planning an NFL adventure. Lucky for you, we've got the scoop on the latest NFL schedules. So let’s discuss the possibilities.

In the AFC West, the Chargers' history with the Las Vegas Raiders has been rocky. Back in 1978, a loss to the Raiders resulted in the Bolts’ elimination from the playoffs, but it was the way it happened that hurt the most. A fumbled ball dubbed the “Holy Roller” was batted across the goal line for a touchdown. The incident was so shocking it led to an NFL rule change!

They also have a fierce competitor in the Kansas City Chiefs. The adversaries have gone head-to-head at least twice annually since 1960, and their bitter ongoing battle is rooted in a number of events. For starters, they’ve always competed in the same division, even in the AFL. Then, there are the staff and players who have left one team for the other. Finally, you have cases of classic upsets like the 1993 AFC Championship shutout and the big comeback win in 2008 that kept the Chargers’ season alive.

If you happen to see the Denver Broncos on the docket, take notice! They left the Chargers with a score to settle after beating them in the playoffs four out of five times in the 1980s. And the Baltimore Ravens are known to be one of the more physical teams they face off against, adding an extra dose of drama to their duels.

Finally, be on the lookout for little surprises like meetings with National Football Conference powerhouses that rarely play a role in the Bolts’ saga. Honestly, any game day is a good day, so no matter what, you’re bound to have a blast!

SoFi Stadium Information

Located in Inglewood, California, SoFi Stadium is the home of the Los Angeles Chargers. This 3.1-million-square-foot masterpiece with a $5.5 billion price tag is truly a spectator’s paradise. From the moment you walk through the gates, you'll realize you have entered a marvel of engineering. It is packed with impressive features!

A translucent canopy covers the entire seating area, creating a unique and immersive atmosphere. Equipped with 27,000 embedded LED pucks, it displays images that can be seen from planes flying into Los Angeles International Airport. As if that weren’t enough, the massive 70,000-square-foot video board provides stunning views for the 70,000+ attendees.

Speaking of the airport, because of its proximity to the sports complex, the vertical space stadium architects had to work within was limited. To eliminate any risk of flight path disruption, about ¾ of the building was constructed underground. The Matrix Turf playing surface itself lies 100 feet down, and it took excavation of more than seven million cubic yards of dirt to make that happen.

Everyone knows the weather in SoCal is enviable, so advanced aerodynamics give this facility an indoor-outdoor feel. Wind can pass through its 46 side panels, cooling people off with ocean breezes and offering them peeks at Malibu, the Hollywood Hills, and Palos Verdes.

Of course, no game day is complete without fan interaction. This structure was designed to magnify the sounds of the raucous Chargers faithful who want to make their presence felt. From the moment the team takes the field, the arena is filled with the amplified noise of the crowd.

Parking & Alternative Transportation

SoFi Stadium lots open four hours prior to kickoff, but finding a vacancy is tough. For your convenience, we'll give you a chance to reserve parking passes when you purchase Los Angeles Chargers tickets through GoTickets.com. Taking advantage of this service is highly recommended, as it allows you to spend less time searching for a lot and more valuable minutes on pre-game activities.

If you can’t find space in the SoFi lots, Inglewood Park & Go offers shuttles from remote sites. Pick-up locations include the Civic Center Garage on Manchester Blvd., the Inglewood Public Library, the Senior Center Garage on East Queen Street, and the Locust Street Garage. The service extends to the El Segundo Lot on East Imperial Highway and the Playa Vista Lot on Park Terrace.

For those who prefer not to drive, there are alternative options to help you get to the field in time for kickoff. The Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority (Metro) offers a C Line train to the Hawthorne/Lennox Station, where you can catch the SoFi Stadium Express shuttle directly to the venue. A few Metro Bus routes should also be able to put you in the vicinity.

Cyclists often use the Ballona Creek Bike Path to trek to games. Bike parking is available in several places throughout the district, but you must bring your own lock to secure your cycle. Look for racks in the lots across from River's Lake, or if you’re near the Pink Zone, as you get closer to the field.

Please note that transportation options are subject to change without notice.

Bolts Tailgating & Game Day Traditions

Game days in Inglewood are a dynamic fusion of Southern California flair, passionate fandom, and thrilling football traditions. Adorned in Chargers' blue and gold, tailgating enthusiasts turn the Pink Zone at SoFi Stadium into a vibrant celebration full of food and fun.

Thunder Alley is touted as the ultimate tailgate. Look for the sea of canopies, and that’s where you’re sure to find friendly folks ready to mingle and talk football, even if you’re a (polite) member of the opposing team’s fanbase. Remember to take cash to tip the generous fellow revelers who supply refreshments!

As ticket holders begin to head toward the gates, the Thunderbolt Drumline can be heard in the distance. With the starting whistle minutes away, the "Thunderstruck" anthem heralds the Chargers' entrance, setting the stage for an adrenaline-packed event. The Charger Girls dazzle the crowd with high-energy performances, and people all over the building begin to “Bolt Up!”

Immerse yourself in this unforgettable scene! Buy those Los Angeles Chargers tickets you've been wanting, and create lasting memories with family, friends, and the rest of Bolt Nation as you celebrate every touchdown and witness the future of this terrific team.
