About Megadeth

As Dave Mustaine sat on a bus, headed home after being booted from Metallica, he angrily scrawled the following words in his notebook: “The arsenal of megadeath can not be rid.” And so, from the fiery aftermath of his unceremonious termination, Megadeth emerged. With his ferocious guitar riffs and searing vocals coupled with David Ellefson's thunderous bass, the band would quickly gain notoriety.

Their breakthrough came with the release of Rust in Peace, a seminal album hailed by critics and fans as a metal masterpiece, establishing the group’s status as pioneers. From chart-topping hits such as "Symphony of Destruction" to politically charged anthems like "Peace Sells," the band's catalog has resonated with audiences worldwide, earning them countless accolades and over 38 million records sold.

As one of thrash metal’s "Big Four" alongside Metallica, Slayer, and Anthrax, they have played a pivotal role in elevating the genre to global prominence. Despite lineup changes over the years, Megadeth's influence remains undiminished, and they continue to inspire generations of metalheads, shaping the trajectory of the genre. Their enduring commitment ensures their place among a pantheon of legends.

Megadeth’s Setlist

Megadeth’s music is a high-octane amalgamation of aggressive shredding, maniacal drums, and emotionally charged lyrics. Their studio work, filled with deceptively intricate compositions and dynamic rhythms, is transformed into electrifying performances on stage. When you see them live, expect at least a few of these hard-hitting setlist standards:

  1. Peace Sells

  2. Holy Wars… the Punishment Due

  3. Hangar 18

  4. Symphony of Destruction

  5. In My Darkest Hour

  6. Wake up Dead

  7. Trust

  8. Sweating Bullets

  9. A Tout Le Monde

  10. Tornado of Souls

Live Moments That Made Headlines

Megadeth's concerts have consistently impressed fans and captured the attention of the media, creating memorable moments that have echoed throughout the metal community. Each show puts the band's relentless energy and tight musicianship on display, solidifying their reputation as stalwarts of thrash. These have been among their most talked-about moments:

  • February 19, 1984: Kicking off their first major North American tour on a bill that included Exciter, Death Angel, and Exodus, Megadeth took the stage at The Stone in San Francisco. Their set was predominantly focused on their debut album, and even though the crowd ate up everything they offered, many of the songs have since been revamped or dropped from their setlist.

  • January 27, 1987: As a special guest of Alice Cooper on the Constrictor tour, Megadeth put on a memorable show at the Kaiser Convention Center in Oakland, California. This promotional opportunity in support of Peace Sells... but Who's Buying? helped the group rapidly expand their growing fanbase, positioning them in larger venues with room for much bigger audiences.

  • September 12, 1992: On the South European leg of the Monsters of Rock tour, Megadeth was hitting their stride as part of a lineup that included Iron Maiden, Black Sabbath, Pantera, Testament, and Warrant. The set included live debuts of “Sweating Bullets” and “Foreclosure of a Dream,” plus an encore that featured a cover of the Sex Pistols’ “Anarchy in the U.K.”

  • July 25, 1999: Closing out the tumultuous weekend of Woodstock '99, Megadeth delivered an electrifying set on the West Stage. Amidst raging fires and chaos, the band remained focused as they powered through tracks from their upcoming album Risk, and dedicated their final song, "Peace Sells," to their original drummer Gar Samuelson, who had passed just eleven days prior.

  • July 21, 2005: Launching the Gigantour festival at Fresno’s Selland Arena, Megadeth led a lineup that included Dream Theater, Anthrax, Fear Factory, Life of Agony, and other big draws. As the organizers and headliners, they made sure their set was worth waiting for, treating fans to an expansive setlist of favorites plus a few songs from their 2004 album, The System Has Failed.

  • June 24, 2009: Megadeth and Slayer reunited for the Canadian Carnage tour, marking their first co-headlining effort in over 15 years. The tour began at General Motors Place in Vancouver, and the biggest moments of the set were the world premiere of “Head Crusher” from Endgame and a mind-blowing encore of “Holy Wars... The Punishment Due” from Rust in Peace.”

  • June 22, 2010: During the Sonisphere Festival, the Big Four—Megadeth, Metallica, Slayer, and Anthrax—converged on Vasil Levski National Stadium in Sofia, Bulgaria. The monumental show lasted over five hours, and on October 29, 2010, video footage was simultaneously broadcast in HD in over a thousand theaters across the globe, an epic feat befitting the historic occasion.
