About El Alfa
Born Emanuel Herrera Batista in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, El Alfa got his professional start in music playing at local teen clubs and parties. By 2008, he was making a name for himself on the Dominican urban scene, and he formed a duo with Eddy Wilson before going solo in 2009. His career took off with singles like "Coche Bomba" and "Coco Mordan," and his humorous lyrics resonated widely.
The dembow rapper’s broader exposure came from posting his tracks on YouTube, beginning with "Muevete Jevi," a 2012 release that shined a spotlight on his distinctive and highly controlled voice and fast-paced rhythms. Massive success was on the horizon, but perhaps it was his feud with El Mayor Clasico that motivated him more, as the two dropped diss tracks, driving the popularity of their genre.
In 2013, El Alfa released Dembow Exitos, a collection of ten songs that defined him. This early work earned him a bigger following, opening the door for "Tarzan." which caught the attention of Puerto Rico's premier reggaeton and Latin pop artists, including Nicky Jam. He began to work with established artists. His 2018 studio album, Disciplina, featured contributions from Amenazzy, Bryant Mayers, and La Manta.
El Hombre (2018) and El Androide (2020) both soared to number six on the US Billboard Latin Rhythm Charts, and Sabiduria (2022) and Sagitario (2022) weren’t far behind. In 2023, El Rey del Dembow peaked at number eight. An EP and compilations round out his discography, which seems to be growing rapidly, and the prolific artist shows no signs of slowing down anytime soon.
El Alfa is credited with helping to popularize dembow, bringing its fast drum beats and carefree energy to a global audience. His track "Suave" has amassed millions of views on YouTube, and he has been honored with Premios Juventud, Heat Latin Music Awards, and Premio Lo Nuestro. There’s little doubt he will continue to bridge the gap between Dominican urban music and mainstream Latin music
