About John Legend

John Legend is known for his unmistakable voice and his distinctive blend of R&B, soul, pop, and neo-soul. Growing up in Springfield, Ohio, he began his journey in music at a young age, playing the piano at age 4 and singing in the church choir. When he was 15, he won a Black History Month essay contest with a submission detailing how he would make history as a successful black musician.

While studying at the University of Pennsylvania, he was the president and musical director of a jazz and pop a cappella group known as the Counterparts. His vocals on Joan Osborne’s “One Of Us” grabbed the attention of Deke Sharon and Amanda Newman of Varsity Vocals, who featured the arrangement on the 1997 Best of Collegiate a Cappella compilation.

The following year, he played piano on Lauryn Hill's critically acclaimed and Grammy-winning album The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill. This early exposure paved the way for further work in the industry, and he soon began writing, recording, and producing his own music. After independently releasing two albums, he was introduced to Kanye West, who signed him to GOOD Music.

Get Lifted, Legend’s first album on the label, was produced by West, Dave Tozer, and will.i.am. It debuted at number seven on the U.S. Billboard 200, and a star was born. His talent and contributions to the music industry have been recognized with numerous honors, including multiple Grammys, a Golden Globe, an Oscar, and a Tony, making him one of an elite group of artists classified as EGOT winners.

John Legend continues to be a catalyst for bridging genres, from R&B and pop to hip-hop, and he often uses his platform to address social and political issues he believes in. Fans can expect him to keep adding his personal touches to new music, discovering up-and-coming talent, and putting on unparalleled performances throughout the world.
