The Wisconsin Basketball Schedule
Once you’ve decided to see a live game, the most difficult thing you’ll have to do is choose an opponent likely to deliver what you want in a matchup. Each season of Badgers basketball takes you on a ride through storied rivalries and high-stakes showdowns. Each encounter is an opportunity for the team to showcase its skills and determination, but some adversaries stand out above the rest!
Key Badgers Competitors
-
University of Minnesota: The Golden Gophers, with their energetic play and strategic execution, test the Badgers' adaptability. This is one of the oldest rivalries in college basketball, reflecting a deeply rooted competitive nature between the neighboring states.
-
Penn State University: The Nittany Lions present a perimeter shooting threat. Penn State has also shown versatility, and their ability to adapt can be intimidating. Battles between these Big Ten teams are as unpredictable as they are enticing.
-
University of Iowa: In a classic duel that pits the Hawkeyes' quick-paced offense against the Badgers’ disciplined defense, ball control is key. No matter where these squads stand, their meetings have the potential to reshape conference standings.
-
Indiana University: The Hoosiers represent a rich basketball tradition. Their dynamic style is challenging, but the Badgers’ calculated approach can counter it. Indiana is always fun to watch, and victory for Wisconsin would be a confidence-building upset.
-
University of Michigan: The effective perimeter play of the Wolverines can be tough to overcome. The Badgers will need to fill in space where they can and make use of their precise passing ability to outscore this formidable opponent!
Kohl Center
One thing the Badgers can always count on is the Kohl Center. This foreboding facility on the University of Wisconsin’s campus in Madison has been home to the UW men's, and women's basketball teams since 1998. The student section, known as the "Grateful Red," is widely celebrated for its enthusiastic support, helping to transform the venue into a veritable fortress.
U.S. Senator and UW alumnus Herb Kohl was a major benefactor, donating $25 million to the arena’s construction and earning the right to have his name on the marquee. Up to 17,287 spectators can find seats for events in the multipurpose arena, which also hosts ice hockey and wrestling as well as concerts and large-scale school gatherings.
Parking
Nearby lots include the following:
-
Grainger Hall Garage: 325 N. Brooks Street
-
Lake & Johnson Ramp: 301 N. Lake Street
-
Lot 88: 105 E. Campus Mall
-
Lot 91: 111 N. Frances Street
Spaces fill up fast, so you should plan to arrive early. We recommend reserving parking when you purchase your Wisconsin Badgers basketball tickets to ensure a hassle-free arrival. Then, you can concentrate on the good stuff, like getting into the Kohl Center in time to explore the arena, find your seats, and enjoy any pre-game activities.
Alternative Transportation
Madison Metro Transit operates bus services in Madison. The UW Commuter Solutions team can help you with a personalized trip plan, or you can use Metro’s Trip Planner to plot your own course. Keep the park-and-ride lots in mind, as they allow you to leave your car in a nearby town and take a bus the rest of the way, eliminating the stressful search for parking in the vicinity of the venue.
Notable University of Wisconsin Basketball Players
When you see a UW game, you could be witnessing the early days of the next basketball legend! This list features some of the most successful Badgers alumni, spotlighting their journey from the collegiate courts to notable professional careers in the NBA or the international leagues:
-
Don Rehfeldt (1944–1950): A reliable power forward, two-time Big Ten leading scorer, and 1950 conference MVP, Rehfeldt was renowned for his hook shot and was the first Badger to score 1000 points. He was drafted 2nd overall in 1950 by the Baltimore Bullets (now Washington Wizards) but sold to the Hawks in 1951. He was a charter member of the University of Wisconsin–Madison Athletic Hall of Fame.
-
Wes Matthews (1977–1980): Matthews distinguished himself as a powerful point guard in the Badgers’ backcourt, consistently leading Wisconsin in points and assists. Drafted 14th overall in 1980 by the Washington Bullets, like Rehfeldt, he was traded to the Hawks. Matthews was known for his playmaking and leadership with several teams during his nine-year NBA career.
-
Michael Finley (1991–1995): USA Basketball Male Athlete of the Year and two-time First-Team All-Big Ten, Finley led the Badgers in scoring and helped to revitalize the program. Drafted 21st overall in 1995 by the Phoenix Suns, he had a successful NBA career, including two All-Star appearances and a 2007 championship win with the San Antonio Spurs.
-
Devin Harris (2001–2004): Harris' quickness and scoring ability helped make him the Big Ten Player of the Year in 2004 and set him up nicely for the NBA Draft. The Washington Wizards selected him 5th overall and immediately traded him to the Dallas Mavericks, where he was named to the All-Rookie First Team. His 15-year career included an All-Star selection in 2009.
-
Frank Kaminsky (2011–2015): At Wisconsin, Kaminsky was a consensus First-Team All-American and the National College Player of the Year in 2015. That same year, he was selected 9th overall by the Charlotte Hornets. Throughout his eight-year NBA career, he also lent his keen shooting ability to the Phoenix Suns, Atlanta Hawks, and Houston Rockets.
