About Bob Dylan

Bob Dylan was born Robert Allen Zimmerman in Duluth, Minnesota, in 1941. After leaving college at the end of his freshman year, he traveled to New York City to visit his friend and mentor Woody Guthrie. While there, he released his self-titled debut album. The 1962 release was a compilation of traditional material with two original compositions: ”Talkin’ New York” and “Song to Woody.”

Dylan is commonly associated with the sixties folk era, even though elements of rock, blues, and country commonly come through in his music. He has sold more than 145 million albums worldwide, with several tracks serving as symbols of important social movements. In 2008, he received a Pulitzer Prize Special Citation for the profound musical and cultural impact of his lyrical compositions.

Among other accolades, Dylan’s work has earned him Grammy Awards, a Golden Globe, an Academy Award, Lifetime Achievement Awards, the Nobel Prize in Literature, Kennedy Center Honors, and a place in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. His relevance and appeal have never faded, and he continues to be an active and influential figure in the industry. In fact, he is widely regarded as one of the greatest songwriters of all time.

As he continues to tour and produce new music, Dylan’s willingness to experiment—to continue learning—is a testament to his enduring humility and versatility as an artist. He has never been comfortable with people exaggerating his importance, but his talent is unmistakable, his accomplishments unmatched, and he has built a legacy that deserves to be celebrated.

Bob Dylan’s Setlist

Dylan's extensive catalog spans over six decades and touches on personal, political, and social themes. On stage, he often experiments with his own songs, putting a spin on his classics. When you see him in concert, you’re likely to hear his latest arrangements of these standards:

  1. All Along the Watchtower

  2. Highway 61 Revisited

  3. Like a Rolling Stone

  4. Tangled Up in Blue

  5. Blowin' in the Wind

  6. Ballad of a Thin Man

  7. Don't Think Twice, It's All Right

  8. It Ain't Me, Babe

  9. Things Have Changed

  10. Maggie's Farm

Live Moments That Made Headlines

Bob Dylan’s poetic and socially conscious lyrics, influential compositions, and distinctive voice have transcended generations. His storytelling and songs, from folk tunes to rock anthems, have served as cultural milestones, shaping the very essence of music and the experiences it creates. These have been some of his most pivotal performances:

  • July 25, 1965: After a warm reception at the Newport Folk Festival, Bob Dylan challenged his audience by switching from an acoustic to an electric guitar, backed by an amplified band, partway through his set. The decision was met with a mixed reaction. Some fans appreciated the modern shift, while folk music purists reacted with emphatic boos. It was a historic moment with lasting consequences for the legend.

  • August 1, 1971: George Harrison and Ravi Shankar organized a concert at Madison Square Garden to raise money for refugees in Bangladesh. The lineup included Ringo Starr, Eric Clapton, Billy Preston, Leon Russell, and Badfinger. Although he was nervous about performing at the huge event, Dylan was convinced to take the stage. His five-song set, which opened with “A Hard Rain’s A-Gonna Fall,” resonated deeply with the crowd.

  • October 16, 1992: A star-studded lineup that included Neil Young, Willie Nelson, Stevie Wonder, John Mellencamp, Tracy Chapman, Eric Clapton, and Eddie Vedder and Mike McCready of Pearl Jam, among many other greats, gathered to honor three decades of Bob Dylan's astounding influence on the industry. Dylan delighted attendees with “Song to Woody,” “It’s Alright, Ma,” “My Back Pages,” “Knockin’ on Heaven’s Door,” and “Girl From the North Country.”

  • August 14, 1994: Although he never played at Woodstock in 1969, Bob Dylan made the trip to Saugerties, New York, for three more days of peace and music for the 25th-anniversary edition of the festival. He played a dozen songs, including “All Along the Watchtower,” and ended with an encore of “Rainy Day Women #12 & 35” and “It Ain’t Me, Babe.” He said very few words, but that was fine with those who understood the significance of the set and appreciated his appearance.

  • February 25, 1998: At the 40th Annual Grammy Awards, Dylan won Album of the Year for Time Out of Mind and was slated to perform “Love Sick.” Before the ceremony, his production company hired performance artist Michael Portnoygot to dance behind the singer-songwriter. Portnoy maximized his 35 seconds of fame by removing his shirt to reveal the words "Soy Bomb" painted on his chest. He certainly danced, but only until security escorted him off the stage.

  • October 14, 2016: Desert Trip was a music festival at the Empire Polo Club, organized by Goldenvoice, the promoters of Coachella. Bob Dylan was part of a lineup that included The Rolling Stones, Paul McCartney, Neil Young, Roger Waters, and The Who. As the first performer, he launched the event with "Rainy Day Women #12 & 35."  What some did not realize is that, on the previous day, he had been announced as the recipient of the 2016 Nobel Prize in Literature.
