About Sarah McLachlan

Sarah McLachlan, was discovered by Nettwerk Records while singing in a new wave band in Halifax, Nova Scotia, at the age of seventeen. Her debut album, Touch, released in 1988, marked the start of a professional career that would span multiple decades.

Influenced by the likes of Joni Mitchell, Peter Gabriel, and Kate Bush, McLachlan has crafted a sound that weaves together the intimate storytelling of folk, the emotional depth of classic singer-songwriters, and the theatricality of contemporary pop performers.

Beyond her recording success, she pioneered Lilith Fair in the 1990s, which played a crucial role in amplifying the representation of female artists in the music industry. Additionally, she founded the Sarah McLachlan School of Music and is known for her animal rights advocacy efforts.

  • July 5, 1997: The first Lilith Fair kicked off at The Gorge in Washington. It was not just a concert but a major statement. Many promoters felt that a concert lineup that included back-to-back women wouldn't sell. The inaugural tour, headlined by McLachlan, featured Tracy Chapman, Fiona Apple, Paula Cole, Jewel, The Indigo Girls, Lisa Loeb, Shawn Colvin, Natalie Merchant, and Sheryl Crow. It was the highest-grossing touring festival that year.

  • March 21, 1999: At the 71st Academy Awards, Sarah McLachlan and Randy Newman delivered a moving performance of "When She Loved Me" from the Toy Story 2 soundtrack. Their emotional interpretation resonated deeply with the audience at the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion and television viewers at home. The song was nominated for Best Original Song at the Oscars and Golden Globes and won the 1999 Grammy for Best Song Written for a Motion Picture.

  • July 2, 2005: Live 8 was a monumental musical event to raise awareness and motivate leaders to tackle the issue of poverty. It spanned five days and eleven countries and coincided with the G8 inter-governmental summit. The U.S. concert in Philadelphia featured more than 20 performers, including Bon Jovi, Kanye West, Toby Keith, Alicia Keys, Def Leppard, and Stevie Wonder. McLachlan sang  "Fallen", "World on Fire,” and a duet of "Angel” with Josh Groban.

  • September 10, 2011: Sarah McLachlan was asked to perform "Angel" and "I Will Remember You" at the Flight 93 National Memorial Dedication in Shanksville, Pennsylvania. The ceremony took place one day before the 10th anniversary of the crash that killed forty but might have saved hundreds. It was a healing moment for those who had lost loved ones and provided comfort to an entire nation impacted by the horrific events of September 11, 2001.

  • February 12, 2010: Approximately 4,500 performers came together at BC Place in Vancouver to kick off the 2010 Winter Olympics. In the company of fellow Canadian musicians Bryan Adams, Nelly Furtado, Nikki Yanofsky, Joni Mitchell, and Measha Brueggergosman, Sarah McLachlan delivered a stirring rendition of "Ordinary Miracle.” Her performance, set against a backdrop of stunning visuals, was a proud moment for the artist and her country.
