About Alabama

Alabama's journey began in 1969 when cousins Randy Owen, Jeff Cook, and Teddy Gentry established themselves as Young Country in high school, playing small gigs at local venues. In 1972, they changed their name to Wildcountry, but by 1980, they had rebranded as The Alabama Band. While sending out demo tapes, they made their living backing up performers at the Canyon Land theme park in Fort Payne.

They caught the attention of GRT Records, who convinced them to shorten their name and signed them to a one-record deal before going bankrupt. After several failed attempts to find their way into the entertainment industry, they were invited to appear at Nashville’s annual Country Radio Seminar, where they impressed RCA Records. This encounter marked the beginning of their historic run.

Blending traditional melodies with the raw energy of southern rock, Alabama created a sound that earned them a loyal following. Hits like "Mountain Music" and "Dixieland Delight" became anthems for a generation, propelling the band to immense success. Between 1980 and 1987, they set a record with 21 consecutive number-one singles on Billboard's Hot Country chart.

Now, with multiple chart-topping albums to their name, their innovative approach has been recognized with over a dozen Grammy Award nominations and a Best Country Performance win for “Twentieth Century.” In 2005, they were honored with an induction into the Country Music Hall of Fame. Their dedication to their craft has set a standard for excellence that continues to inspire artists today.

  • April 5, 2013: Celebrating 40 years of music, Alabama kicked off their Back to the Bowery tour at the Alabama Theater in Myrtle Beach, where they worked for tips and free beer back in the 70s as Young Country. This time, they stood on stage as special guests, playing songs that prompted sing-alongs, and telling the audience, “You’ve let us live a dream.”

  • July 19, 2023: During CMA Fest at Nissan Stadium, Alabama stunned the audience with a surprise performance that included “Mountain Music” and a medley of other classics.
