About The Aquabats

In the early 1990s, Christian Jacobs, Chad Larson, and Boyd Terry bonded over a shared fondness for fun coupled with a penchant for musical precision. Disenchanted with the Orange County, California, punk movement, they set out to create a satirical band, book a few shows, and inject their own brand of silliness into the scene. However, once they suited up in rubber and neoprene costumes designed by their friend Terry, they became an ensemble centered on a unique thematic concept—superheroes. 

They established a backstory, assumed characters, and developed a following. On the heels of the success of No Doubt and Sublime, they signed with Goldenvoice Records. By the time they released The Fury of The Aquabats!, they had perfected a sound that merged surf, ska, and punk, and it helped them secure the number 12 spot on the US Billboard Top Heatseekers chart, establishing a firm foothold on the industry. The Aquabats had arrived.

Their approach to concerts became a hallmark of their identity, transforming standard gigs into immersive, interactive experiences. From staging battles with villains to involving children in playful activities onstage, each moment on stage was part of a grand spectacle. By the time the new millennium rolled around, they craved change. They took a break to refocus, returning in 2005 with Charge!! They had a new label, a rejuvenated lineup, and a fresh guitar-driven style that suited the era. The event featured a total of 48 acts across six stages, blending the heavy-hitting rock of Ozzfest with the punk ethos of the Warped Tour for tens of thousands in attendance.

• June 6, 2006: Celebrating the 10th anniversary of The Return of The Aquabats, the group performed every track on the album during Comic-Con weekend, which served dual duty as an Aquacadets Summit. This special show featured the return of former member Prince Adam, thrilling long-time fans and adding a touch of nostalgia to the festivities.

• May 7, 2014: The Aquabats played New York City’s Irving Plaza, and much to their delight, their longtime supporters showed up with their kids in tow. The venue was filled with fans, big and small, dressed in signature Aquabats gear, all there to hear timeless tunes like “Martian Girl!” and “Cat with 2 Heads!” They even threw in a Buzzcocks cover for good measure.

• April 8, 2018: Commemorating their 20th anniversary, The Aquabats treated their loyal fans to The Fury of The Aquabats! in its entirety at The Fonda Theatre in Los Angeles. This remarkable show was later released as an exclusive download for The Aquabats! Super Show! Kickstarter backers, allowing them to relive the magical evening.

• April 13, 2024: During the first weekend of Coachella, The Aquabats delivered an unforgettable performance in the Sonora tent, drawing one of the festival’s largest crowds. Their appearance was enhanced by cameos from the characters of "Yo Gabba Gabba!," adding an extra layer of entertainment to the once-in-a-lifetime “Pool Party!”
