The History & Significance of the Belmont Stakes

The Belmont Stakes is a Grade I stakes race for three-year-old American Thoroughbreds, established in 1867 by financier and sportsman August Belmont Sr. The inaugural race took place at Jerome Park Racetrack in the Bronx, a facility built by stock market speculator Leonard Jerome and financed by Belmont himself. In 1905, the event moved to Belmont Park in Elmont, New York, where it was held until construction caused a temporary move to the Saratoga Race Course in 2024.

Belmont was initially conceived as the last race of the season, designed to attract top teams who wanted to showcase their horses and riders. Now, it is the final jewel in the Triple Crown, which includes the Kentucky Derby and the Preakness Stakes. All three races are run within five weeks, and with a track of 1.5 miles (12 furlongs), Belmont is the longest and most challenging leg. Winning requires a once-in-a-lifetime show of speed, stamina, and sheer determination.

Belmont Stakes Winning Traditions

After crossing the finish line, the winning horse is draped in a 40-pound blanket covered in 700 white carnations, symbolizing love and luck, meticulously assembled by florists on a green velvet cloth. Another blanket is placed over the statue of Secretariat, honoring the 1973 Triple Crown champion’s record-setting victory and enduring legacy.

The winning team's owner is presented with a striking Tiffany & Co. trophy, commissioned by August Belmont Jr. in 1896 in memory of his late father. Its sterling silver bowl is held by horses representing the three foundation Thoroughbreds: Eclipse, Herod, and Matchem. On top, there is a figurine of Fenian, the elder Belmont’s horse, who gave the family their first win in 1869.

Belmont Stakes Festival Activities

The Belmont Stakes has become part of a week-long cultural festival that includes family-friendly entertainment, the Belmont Charity Ball, and the Belmont Festival. Steeped in tradition, these activities celebrate the sport of horse racing and its role in American culture.

Moments That Made Headlines

The fine thoroughbreds of the Belmont Stakes, as well as the teams behind them, endear themselves to those in attendance and onlookers from around the world. Of course, there have been exceptionally stunning moments—the kind etched into history books. These have been among the most celebrated wins in Elmont:

  • 1973: Coming off impressive showings at the Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes, Secretariat won the race by a staggering 31 lengths, setting a world record of 2:24 for a 1 ½ mile race. His awe-inspiring victory sealed his Triple Crown!

  • 1977: Seattle Slew came into Belmont undefeated, demonstrating his dominance at every turn. Ridden by jockey Jean Cruguet, his decisive win secured the Triple Crown for his team and earned him a special place among racing's elite.

  • 1998: In one of the closest finishes in Belmont’s history, Victory Gallop’s narrow defeat of Real Quiet prevented a Triple Crown win by just a nose. This dramatic conclusion underscored the unpredictability of Thoroughbred racing.

  • 2007: After overcoming a troubling start in a demonstration of exceptional courage and resilience, Rags to Riches overtook Curlin, the Preakness champion, in a thrilling finish. With this move, she became the first filly to win at Belmont Park since 1905.

  • 2015: American Pharoah crossed the finish line five and a half lengths ahead of his nearest competitor, a triumph that ended a 37-year Triple Crown drought. His performance reignited widespread enthusiasm for the sport of horse racing.
