About Burning Man

In 1986, Larry Harvey and Jerry James began a tradition that has become a phenomenon. What started as a small summer solstice bonfire on San Francisco’s Baker Beach has evolved into an annual gathering in the heart of Nevada's Black Rock Desert. The shift in setting was inspired by a Black Rock dadaist temporary autonomous zone developed by Kevin Evans and John Law in the ‘90s. As the two fellowships became one, Burning Man became a place where anything is possible, transformative change is expected, and free spirits are encouraged to let their creativity run wild.

The celebration was named for the 8-foot-tall wooden man the founders built and burned, and that ritual has remained paramount. The week before Labor Day, tens of thousands of people descend on the same barren landscape, transforming it into a vibrant, temporary metropolis known as Black Rock City. They build The Temple, but The Man is the centerpiece, beckoning people to establish camps, view mind-bending art installations, and dance under the stars until dawn. There are sunrise yoga sessions, secret speakeasies, and spontaneous performances.

Larry Harvey’s 10 Principles reflect the ethos of Burning Man. For the most part, money holds no power here. You won’t see signs of corporate sponsorships anywhere, and aside from fuel (diesel for vehicles and coffee for campers), there are few things cash can buy. Instead, the counterculture thrives on a gifting economy. Donations and favors are unconditional, but the community depends on cooperation and collaboration. This is a place where people overcome barriers and inclusivity is expected. Civic responsibility is assumed, and participation is the path to a life-changing experience.

Each year, as Black Rock City rises from the sands, participants are invited to explore their surroundings, connect with others, and contribute to a unique cultural experiment that leaves a lasting impact on all who attend. The Burning Man Project supports various causes, including environmental sustainability and social justice. And when all is said and done, out of respect for the environment, no physical trace of the activities should be left behind. Even The Man and The Temple are ceremoniously burned, and attendees return home, forever altered by the event.

Notable Burning Man Performers

There is no Burning Man lineup. Unlike a traditional music festival, musical acts are not booked or promoted. Instead, performers participate on their own accord, often as part of independent camps, without any formal announcements. Nevertheless, many well-known artists have contributed to the eclectic atmosphere. The following have been among the most buzz-worthy:

  • Daft Punk (2009)

  • Paul Oakenfold (2013)

  • Major Lazer (2015)

  • Tycho (2016)

  • Alan Parsons (2018)

  • Skrillex (2018)

  • Above & Beyond (2022)

  • Lee Burridge (2022)

  • Diplo (2022)

  • Carl Cox (2023)

Burning Man Moments That Made Headlines

Burning Man has become a global sensation! Known for its communal atmosphere, the gathering reshapes the Black Rock Desert for one week each year and leaves a lasting imprint on its participants. Nothing is to be expected, and anything can happen, as evidenced by these occurrences, which caught the attention of the media and onlookers worldwide:

  • The First Burn (1986): Larry Harvey and Jerry James initiated Burning Man by setting fire to a wooden effigy on Baker Beach, inspired by a summer solstice tradition begun by artist Mary Grauberger. This spontaneous event marked the origin of the Man Burn, which occurs each year on the seventh night of the festival.

  • Funhouse Maze (2005): Attendees this year saw The Man positioned on top of a rotating "funhouse,” disorienting anyone who tried to use him as a navigational guide. Dream-themed artwork on the interactive element blew people's minds, marking this a standout prank in Burning Man’s history.

  • An Early Burn (2007): During a full lunar eclipse, in an unexpected twist, The Man was prematurely set ablaze by Paul Addis, who was later arrested for arson. The crucial symbol of the city was rebuilt in time for the scheduled burn, but the incident drew considerable media coverage and highlighted the festival's unpredictability.

  • Jack Ü (2015): Skrillex delivered a surprise house set at the Robot Heart stage, thrilling attendees with tracks like Orbital's "Halcyon On and On" and Disclosure's "Bang That." This impromptu set by a high-profile DJ underscored Burning Man's reputation for unpredictable and memorable musical experiences.

  • RÜFÜS DU SOL (2022): A rumor started by video game designer Matt Mihaly, also known as Dr. Yes, led thousands to believe that RÜFÜS DU SOL would perform at the Dusty Throwdown. The Australian trio was never planning to appear, but the rumor drew a crowd of thousands. This prank became one of the most talked-about moments of the year.
