About Hannah Gadsby
Hannah Gadsby, a trailblazing Australian comedian from Smithton, Tasmania, has used their fearless honesty and sharp wit to take the world by storm. In 2006, they entered Raw Comedy, an annual Australian competition for emerging stand-up comedians, and won the grand prize. They followed it up with the 2007 Edinburgh Fringe Festival Best Newcomer Award and quickly amassed a following.
Global domination came in 2018 with a controversial stand-up show called Nanette, which delved into themes of gender, homophobia, xenophobia, and trauma. Gadsby’s use of humor to provoke thought and inspire change garnered critical acclaim and numerous accolades, including a prestigious Peabody Award and a Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Writing for a Variety Special.
Gadsby followed up the success of Nanette with Netflix specials based on their Douglas and Body of Work stand-up shows. US tour dates and appearances on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, Late Night with Seth Meyers, and The Late Show with Stephen Colbert exposed them to a wider audience. Their 2022 book, Ten Steps to Nanette: A Memoir Situation, became a New York Times bestseller.
An ambassador for the LGBTQ+ community, Gadsby was recognized with a Media Equality Award by the Human Rights Campaign in 2023. They have continued to challenge conventions and spark important conversations through comedy, advocating for visibility, acceptance, and understanding, and their commitment to social commentary has made them a transformative figure in the entertainment industry.
