About Marilyn Manson

Marilyn Manson is the brainchild of Brian Hugh Warner, who began his foray into the music industry in 1989 as the frontman of a provocative and theatrical band called Marilyn Manson & the Spooky Kids. Guitarist Daisy Berkowitz (Scott Putesky) was a fellow founding member, but bassist Olivia Newton Bundy (Brian Tutunick) and keyboardist Zsa Zsa Speck (Perry Pandrea) were added later. Each name encapsulated the beauty and horror of American culture, and the musicians set out to create unforgettable sonic and visual experiences.

They explored controversial themes in their songs and on stage, creating a buzz wherever they went. As word spread, the group developed a loyal following in South Florida, particularly amongst hardcore, industrial, and goth audiences. Their work caught the attention of record execs, and they signed a  contract with Sony Music in 1991. However, the deal was rescinded before their first release, and they used the funds to record independent demos. By August of 1992, the lineup had already undergone several changes, and the Spooky Kids were dropped from the name

The change might have been influenced by Trent Reznor of Nine Inch Nails, an associate of Warner’s who was in the process of building his label Nothing Records. He signed Manson, who quickly got to work on a studio album. Portrait of an American Family was released in 1994 and had all of the elements of shock rock, from the album art to the subject matter, which unsurprisingly earned it an “Explicit Lyrics” sticker. Reznor invited the band to join NIN on the Self Destruct Tour, exposing his new protégés to a wider audience after essentially giving them their big break.

Between 1995 and 1996, the Smells Like Children EP spent 50 weeks on the US Billboard 200, and with the release of the concept album Antichrist Superstar in October of ‘96, Marilyn Manson achieved significant critical and commercial success. It peaked at number three, and its follow-up, Mechanical Animals, soared to number one. Subsequent releases proved the group’s staying power, and they earned several accolades, including the 1997 Rolling Stone Best New Artist award, a VMA for “The Dope Show,” and several Grammy nominations.

In 2016, Manson was honored with the Alternative Press Icon Award. Unfortunately, controversy was building behind the scenes, and that overshadowed many accomplishments. The relationship with Reznor had soured, and negative press about Warner, who was the only consistent member of the band by this point, reached a fever pitch in 2021. Now, after conquering the personal issues that plagued him, Marilyn Manson is sober and ready to take on the world again. Will the past be forgotten? Only time will tell. But fans appear ready to give the rocker another chance.

Live Moments That Made Headlines

Manson's performances have transcended music to become cultural talking points. Each show straddles the line between artistically expressive and gratuitously graphic. Still, it’s hard to deny the creativity they exhibit, even if they are intensely provocative. These sets, in particular, have raised eyebrows and potentially crossed boundaries, making them unforgettable events in a storied legacy:

  • September 5, 1996: The Dead to the World Tour began at Irving Plaza in NYC and introduced fans to Antichrist Superstar through 175 shows worldwide. Despite legal and religious opposition to the production’s dramatic themes and Manson's confrontational style, the fuss garnered attention and likely increased ticket sales.

  • September 4, 1997: At the MTV VMAs, Manson created a stir with a performance of "The Beautiful People" that challenged societal norms, pushed the envelope for televised performances, and nearly rendered Chris Rock speechless. While some viewers were offended, others ran out to buy the album.

  • June 8, 2001: Kicking off Ozzfest, the group offered a mix of allure and horror, staying true to their ethos. Disturbing images flashed on a giant screen as a corset-clad Manson incited the crowd, much to the dismay of those who staged protests to try and prevent the mayhem and madness from coming to their town.

  • April 27, 2012: The North American leg of the Hey, Cruel World… Tour started in Providence, Rhode Island. For the band, this trip around the world marked a celebration of the post-Interscope era, and when it came to calling this a “comeback,” Manson was uncharacteristically positive, citing a return to creative freedom.

  • July 9, 2019: Fans in Baltimore got the first taste of the Twins of Evil: Hell Never Dies Tour that paired Marilyn Manson and Rob Zombie as co-headliners. It was certainly a match that made sense, given the musicians’ enduring appeal and theatrical flair. Both were on full display for the opener at the Royal Farms Arena.
