About Mike Birbiglia

Mike Birbiglia, a native of Shrewsbury, Massachusetts, has been on the comedy scene since he began doing improv in 1997. Inspired by legends like Steven Wright and Mitch Hedberg, he has mastered the art of turning life’s little stumbles into side-splitting stories, delivering each with perfection, and performing across various mediums. After a move to NYC, his biggest breakthrough came in 2008, with his one-man off-Broadway show Sleepwalk With Me, centered around his very real anxiety-induced sleep disorder.

He spun that success into a 2010 New York Times bestseller and a 2012 independent film and has since appeared on TV, including roles in Girls, Orange is the New Black, and Broad City. His voice-acting talents can be heard in the animated shows Summer Camp Island, The Shivering Truth, and Human Resources. He also wrote, produced, and directed Don't Think Twice, a comedy-drama about a New York improv troupe. With these projects, he has broadened his audience and garnered critical acclaim.

Birbiglia won a 2003 ECNY Award for Best Male Stand-up and a 2009 Nightlife Award for Outstanding Comedian in a Major Engagement (Sleepwalk With Me). He was honored as the 2017 Just For Laughs Stand-Up Comedian of the Year and a Kurt Vonnegut Humor Award recipient. In 2019, he won a Drama Desk Award and was recognized by the Outer Critics Circle for his Outstanding Solo Performance for his tour, The New One, which had an extended run off-Broadway before moving to the Cort Theatre.

He is a regular contributor on the Public Radio International-distributed program This American Life and continues to engage his audience with new stand-up material. His ongoing podcast, Working It Out, serves as a creative laboratory where he and his guests make listeners laugh while refining their craft. Whether he’s on stage, behind a camera, or on the air, he brings a unique perspective, so stay tuned for more hilarious insights and unforgettable performances from this multimedia talent!

Comedic Cameos & Other Collaborations

Mike Birbiglia might be best known for his one-man shows, but his work with fellow comedians and other entertainers has been equally impressive. From small roles to standout features, these notable examples have showcased his versatility and adaptability:

  • 2012: Birbiglia directed and starred in the independent film Sleepwalk With Me, but the film’s impact wouldn’t have been the same without his co-writer and co-director Seth Barrish, producers Ira Glass and Jacob Jaffke, and contributions from his brother Joe Birbiglia. The phenomenal cast included Lauren Ambrose, Cristin Milioti, Carol Kane, and James Rebhorn.

  • 2014–2015: Mike Birbiglia and Amy Schumer have been appearing at the same comedy clubs for decades. In 2014, Birbiglia appeared as a guest star on the Comedy Central series Inside Amy Schumer, playing the role of Drew in "Slow Your Roll" (S2.E7). In 2015, he returned for "Wingwoman" (S3.E9) and teamed up with Schumer again to portray Tom in Trainwreck.

  • 2017: Following a 25-city tour of his stand-up show The New One, Birbiglia hosted the aptly-named and limited podcast The Old Ones, where he analyzed past routines with Hasan Minhaj, Pete Holmes, Jennifer Stein, John Mulaney, Ira Glass, Judd Apatow, and Joe Birbiglia. He even manages to squeeze in an impromptu audition for the musical Waitress with guest Sara Bareilles.

  • 2020: The entertainment industry was rocked by the pandemic. Shows were canceled, and many people found themselves scrambling to earn a living. Mike Birbiglia began hosting a daily Instagram show, Tip Your Waitstaff, to raise money for comedy club workers who had lost their incomes. Guests included Gary Gulman, Nikki Glaser, Sarah Silverman, and Melissa Villaseñor.

  • 2022: Mike Birbiglia appeared in the video for Taylor Swift’s song "Anti-Hero.” He was cast as Preston, one of Swift's fictional sons, battling siblings portrayed by Mary Elizabeth Ellis and John Early. Birbiglia was introduced to Swift by Jack Antonoff, but according to his interview on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, when she asked him to be in her video, he thought he was being catfished.
