The History of the New York Knickerbockers

Before we dive into the history and evolution of this squad, it's important to know what "knickerbockers" are. Simply put, they are pants. They gather below the knee, a style worn by Dutch settlers in America. After Washington Irving penned his satirical piece, A History of New York, under the pseudonym Diedrich Knickerbocker in 1809, these pants came to represent "real" New Yorkers—descendants of the founders of the city.

That was the image the owners wanted for their new Big Apple NBA franchise. The organization's original logo, created by sports cartoonist Willard Mullin, featured a character called "Father Knickerbocker" wearing those distinct trousers as he dribbled a basketball. Even the team's official colors, royal blue, orange, and white, were borrowed from the flag of the Dutch Republic.

With their identity firmly established, in 1946, the New York Knickerbockers were born. A charter member of the Basketball Association of America, it didn't take long to etch their mark on the league. They reached the playoffs eight times in their first nine seasons! But by the early 1950s, the BAA had merged with the National Basketball League, making them part of the National Basketball Association.

Between 1951 and 1953, led by players like Nat "Sweetwater" Clifton and Harry "The Horse" Gallatin, the club earned three consecutive NBA Finals appearances. And while they were quieter in the '60s, behind the scenes, a dominant center named Willis Reed was becoming the cornerstone of the franchise. He combined forces with Walt Frazier to lead the squad to back-to-back titles in 1970 and 1973.

Despite challenges in the ensuing decades, a resurgence came at the turn of the 21st century as Patrick Ewing and Allan Houston led the Knicks to five consecutive postseason appearances and an NBA Finals berth in 1999. They fell short of reclaiming the prize but proved they could still compete at the highest level.

So, where does the team go from here? Only time will tell. The organization has always remained steadfast in its pursuit of another championship. If you want to join them on their journey back to the top, check out the official NBA schedule, choose a worthy opponent, and buy Knicks tickets today!

The NY Knicks Basketball Schedule

Madison Square Garden, known as "The World's Most Famous Arena," is the Knicks' historic home. A beloved destination for any basketball fan, this venue has hosted a multitude of events since its opening in 1879. From championship sports to top-tier concerts, it’s where history and entertainment intersect. Within these walls, countless spectacular moments have shaped pop culture.

The circular structure offers a plethora of seating options, with something to please every guest. If you want an up-close and personal view of the action and are willing to pay for it, sitting courtside is the way to go. Sections 4 and 6 are highly coveted due to their proximity to the players’ benches.

100-level baseline and corner sections provide great vantage points without the premium price, and you’ll discover they’re much easier to find than floor seats. But if you’re on a tight budget, the 200 level is a solid choice, with sections 204–207 being the most family-friendly in terms of affordability and access to amenities.

Up another tier, you’ll see the 300-level Chase Bridge seats sticking out over the levels below. What many don’t realize is that this overhang helps give ticket holders in this section a better view than they would have had in the back rows of the 100 and 200 levels.

You might think real Knicks fanatics always sit courtside, but that’s not true. You’ll find loads of them, loud and proud, in the Blue Seats on the 400 level under the west balcony. They might be roughing it, but they are in great company!

Parking

Parking lots close to the venue include the following:

  • SP+ Parking: 230 W 31st Street

  • 320 W 30th St Garage

  • Icon Parking: One Pennsylvania Plaza

  • Meyers Parking: 220 W 31st Street

  • Dock parking @ PENN 1: 272 W 34th Street

GoTickets offers an opportunity to book parking passes at the time of your NY Knicks ticket purchase. This is highly recommended so you won’t have to worry about finding vacancies on the day of the event when everyone is fighting for the closest spaces.

Alternative Transportation

With MSG sitting right on top of Penn Station, most transport methods converge below your destination. This includes Long Island Railroad (LIRR) and New Jersey Transit (NJT) routes. Those traveling from the suburbs to the north of the city can utilize Metro-North Railroad services to Grand Central Terminal, then transfer or walk the rest of the way.

Multiple Metropolitan Transportation Authority subway lines, including the 1, 2, 3, A, C, and E, have stations nearby, and buses run around the clock in the vicinity. Taxis are also readily available on the streets of NYC, and ferries connect visitors from various locations along the Hudson River.

Ready for Your Knicks Game?

Picture yourself stepping into the arena as the buzz of the crowd makes its way around the bowl. The pre-game festivities have everyone talking, but as the lights dim and a spotlight shines on the court, all eyes turn to the floor to see the Knicks players emerge from the locker room.

After each name is announced in dramatic fashion, a thunderous roar erupts as a towering athlete is ushered to the benches by the Knicks City Dancers. Tip-off time has arrived, and you're more than ready for this game.

Finally, the teams are in motion, traveling back and forth, their sneakers squeaking against the waxed wood. You're on the edge of your seat, completely captivated by the action. Every basket, every steal, and every block sends a surge of excitement through the building, and you're right there in the thick of it all.

Well, you can be! Why just imagine it when you can do it? Pick a game, and find your place in the stands so you can experience this in person. It’s time to buy those New York Knicks tickets you’ve been dreaming about!
