About ScHoolboy Q

ScHoolboy Q was born Quincy Matthew Hanley in Wiesbaden, Germany, but now hails from South Los Angeles, where he is a prominent figure on the hip-hop scene. He began his rise to fame in 2006 and gained traction with the release of his mixtapes ScHoolboy Turned Hustla in 2008 and Gangsta & Soul in 2009. After Signing with Top Dawg Entertainment, he dropped his debut studio album, Setbacks, in 2011 and its follow-up, Habits & Contradictions, a year later. These early works established him as a rising star.

His biggest breakthrough came with the release of his 2014 album Oxymoron, which soared to number one on the US Billboard 200. Singles such as "Man of the Year," "Studio" featuring BJ the Chicago Kid, and "Collard Greens" with Kendrick Lamar kept the momentum going, and a Best Rap Album Grammy nomination soon followed. The Blank Face LP in 2016, CrasH Talk in 2019, and Blue Lips in 2024 had similar success, solidifying his position in the genre as an innovator and influencer.

ScHoolboy Q has been instrumental in reviving West Coast hip-hop with Kendrick Lamar, Ab-Soul, and Jay Rock, his fellow Black Hippy hip-hop supergroup members. Branching out to collaborate with an array of talented artists, like Kanye West, 2 Chainz, and Travis Scott, has showcased his versatility and broadened his reach. As long as he continues to put his powerful storytelling ability to good use, there’s no doubt he will continue his reign as a major force in music.

Live Moments That Made Headlines

ScHoolboy Q’s concerts have consistently wowed audiences, often generating worldwide buzz. His stage presence and dynamic flow keep the audience hooked on every word, and his ability to connect with fans makes each performance feel personal. He makes a lasting impression on every stage, but these have been among his most talked-about appearances:

  • November 16, 2012:  As part of A$AP Rocky's Long.Live.A$AP tour early in his career, ScHoolboy Q rocked the historic National Theater in Richmond, Virginia.  He shined a spotlight on tracks from Habits and Contradictions, and the audience went wild when Q and A$AP Rocky combined forces for unforgettable renditions of "Hands on the Wheel" and "Brand New Guy.”

  • June 29, 2013: ScHoolboy Q joined J. Cole, Miguel, Kendrick Lamar, and Snoop Dogg for the BET Experience, a precursor to the BET Awards show at the Staples Center. Cameos from Dr. Dre, Warren G, Future, Ace Hood, and Trinidad James provided extra excitement as the artists representing multiple eras turned the Crypto.com Arena into a masterclass in hip-hop and R&B.

  • October 15, 2013: During the BET Hip-Hop Awards 2023 Cypher, ScHoolboy Q, Kendrick Lamar, Jay Rock, Ab-Soul, and Isaiah Rashad, all representing TDE at the time, delivered a memorable freestyle over the instrumental track from Mobb Deep’s “Shook Ones, Pt. II.” Q took the lead with a verse about authenticity and life in LA, setting the cadence for his cohorts.

  • July 2, 2016: The last moments of A$AP Ferg’s set at WOO HAH! in The Netherlands went down in hip-hop history! Jaws dropped when he invited A$AP Rocky, ScHoolboy Q, Gunna, Young Thug, Tyler the Creator, and others to the stage, where they lit into “LPFJ2” and “Shabba” before Ferg and Q let loose on “Work.” They ended with a version of “New Level” that shook the rafters.

  • November 4, 2019: ScHoolboy Q launched his CrasH Tour at Warehouse Live in Houston, where a smoky haze set the scene for a mix of tracks that spanned his discography. His stage-diving antics allowed him to have fun with the crowd, who demanded an encore. And he definitely delivered with “Die Wit Em” and “Hell of a Night.” It was the perfect end to a spectacular show!

  • September 29, 2023: Kal Banx and his friends came together at The Boiler Room LA. ScHoolboy Q, Denzel Curry, SiR, Smino, Soul, Zay, and others gathered at the turntables for over an hour, playing through a list of crowd pleasers. The biggest surprise was a spoiler from Q, who introduced “THank god 4 me” an unreleased track from his eagerly anticipated album, Blue Lips.
