About Spoon
Spoon was formed in Austin, Texas, in 1993 by a singer, songwriter, and guitarist named Britt Daniel and his former Alien Beats bandmate, drummer Jim Eno. Daniel invited Eno to listen to some of the songs he had been working on, and they forged an instant connection, almost immediately setting out to build a new band. They posted ads seeking other members, and within a month, they were booking gigs.
The name was chosen from a stack of suggestion cards on the eve of their first show together. It’s a nod to a song by a 1970s German krautrock group known as Can, and Eno still questions the decision after thirty years. Given their nature, the eccentric moniker suits them. They took the stage as Spoon, and before long, they were playing a showcase at SXSW and attracting attention from major labels.
They were signed to Matador and released Telephono in 1996. It was recorded in their producer’s garage and epitomized their vibe. However, sales were dismal, and it seemed the problem was that no one knew what to do with Spoon. They were … different. While that’s exactly what they were going for, they might have underestimated the challenge of convincing people to give them a chance.
They had their first Billboard charting album with Gimme Fiction in 2005, but it wasn’t until 2007 that their big break came with the release of Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga. Another interesting choice, the album’s title represents the keyboard sounds at the start of “The Ghost of You Lingers.” It soared to number ten on the Billboard 200, and “The Underdog” made its way onto the Alternative Airplay chart, peaking at number 26.
This opened the door to future success. Transference and They Want My Soul broke into the top five on the Billboard 200, and their singles “Don’t You Evah” and “Got Nuffin” reached the top spot on the US Sales chart. Their tracks have been featured on television shows and in movies, expanding their reach. They earned their first Grammy nomination for Best Rock Album in 2022 with Lucifer on the Sofa.
Spoon continues to evolve while maintaining their distinctive sound. They have done their part in diversifying the indie music landscape, and with a track record of high artistic integrity and a penchant for innovation, fans can always expect their music to explore new sonic territories. Their history suggests that whatever comes next from Spoon will be just as unique and compelling as their past endeavors.
Spoon’s Setlist
Spoon’s catalog is characterized by a stripped-down aesthetic, which ironically takes meticulous production to produce. Their sound, predominantly crafted by Britt Daniel, is the epitome of the indie rock ethos. It’s marked by sharp lyrics, precise rhythms, and elements that are unmistakably theirs. When you catch them live, expect some of these songs to show up on the setlist:
-
The Underdog
-
I Turn My Camera On
-
Don’t you Ever
-
My Mathematical mind
-
Inside Out
-
Rent I Pay
-
Don’t Make Me a Target
-
I Summon You
-
Do You
-
Got Nuffin
Live Moments That Made Headlines
On stage, Spoon balances the precision of their studio recordings with the spontaneity and intensity of an interactive event. Their ability to masterfully execute their extensive catalog in a live setting is what makes their concerts must-see musical showcases. These have been among their most impactful moments:
-
December 3, 2009: Weeks before the release of Transference, Spoon headlined a holiday show in Kansas City. “The Night The Buzz Stole Christmas” allowed them to test their new material on a live audience. KRBZ, who sponsored the event, had been playing “Written In Reverse,” so as soon as the group played the first few notes, the Midland Theatre erupted in cheers!
-
March 26, 2010: Performing in front of a packed house at Radio City Music Hall, Spoon marked a milestone with the help of friends Dan Boeckner, Eleanor Friedberger, and Stephen Patterson. They anchored the setlist around new tracks from Transference but also dove into the archives of fan favorites. The twist was a seven-piece horn section that even elevated classics like “Don't You Evah.”
-
April 18, 2010: Spoon treated the Coachella crowd to a set that amplified their studio sound. The opener, “Is Love Forever,” got things off to a good start, but the performance only got better from there. “Written in Reverse” was a jam, especially when the chorus was echoed by thousands of voices, and the groove of “Don't You Evah” was perfect for the afternoon party.
-
December 7, 2014: At the Fox Theatre, Spoon surprised fans by breaking from their typically precise live format, instead opting for something a little more spontaneous. Highlights included a raw rendition of “The Underdog,” which had people feeding off Britt Daniel’s visible enjoyment. His carefree mood made the evening unforgettable.
-
May 24, 2022: Spoon delivered a robust 21-song set that delved deep into their discography, emphasizing their latest material while revisiting nostalgic gems. The synergy between the band and the audience seemed effortless, enhanced by the intimacy of the Mission Ballroom, a venue with a capacity of under 4,000. The momentum never faded, making this show one for the ages.
