About Stone Temple Pilots

Initially known as Swing, then Mighty Joe Young, Scott Weiland, Eric Kretz, and brothers Robert and Dean DeLeo recorded a demo and were booking gigs in the San Diego area around 1990 before they became Stone Temple Pilots. The new moniker was built from the initials STP, which they had seen on motor oil company stickers, and it allowed them to sidestep a name clash with a Chicago blues guitarist.

With their new identity, they made a name for themselves on the club scene and signed with Atlantic Records in 1992, releasing their debut album Core in the same year. It quickly went platinum in the U.S. and peaked at number three on the Billboard 200, with tracks like “Creep,” “Plush,” “Sex Type Thing,” and “Wicked Garden” in heavy rotation on alternative and rock stations.

The band's ascent continued as they carved out a space for themselves within the '90s grunge scene, distinguished by their Southern California roots. Their second album, Purple, catapulted to the number one spot on the Billboard 200 in 1994, propelled by hits like "Interstate Love Song" and "Vasoline." Their success was further cemented when they snagged a Grammy in 1994.

Over the years, STP continued to produce fresh material and tour. However, they experienced significant shifts along the way, notably the tragic losses of their original frontman, Scott Weiland, and his successor, Chester Bennington, followed by the addition of Jeff Gutt in 2017. Each era was punctuated with a new eponymous album, demonstrating their resilience and ability to evolve.

In 2020, they released Perdida, which means “loss” in Spanish. As they recover from the past and move forward, fans are eager to see what Stone Temple Pilots’ next phase entails. It’s clear their creative light, which burned so brightly in the 90s, is far from out. New music and tours bring the promise of great things for a group that has endured through triumph and tragedy for more than three decades.
