About Commodores

The Commodores, hailing from Tuskegee, Alabama, embarked on their musical journey in the late 1960s while studying at Tuskegee Institute. Members of two student groups—Lionel Richie, Thomas McClary, and William King of the Mystics, and Andre Callahan, Michael Gilbert, and Milan Williams of the Jays—honed their skills performing at fraternity parties and other campus events.

They won the university's annual freshman talent contest and expanded into gigs at local establishments and community festivals. For some time, James Ingram served as frontman, but when he left to serve in Vietnam Walter “Clyde” Orange and Lionel Richie shared lead vocalist duties. The Commodores carved their niche, blending funk, soul, and R&B, crafting popular dance tunes and heartfelt ballads

Touring with The Jackson 5 catapulted them into the spotlight, and they signed with Motown in November 1972. Their commercial success was evident, with albums soaring to the top of the US Billboard charts, numerous top-ten hits, and multiple number-one singles. Additionally, the Grammy-winning artists were inducted into both the Alabama Music Hall of Fame and Vocal Group Hall of Fame.

With a rich legacy behind them, The Commodores have kept the momentum going. Despite lineup changes and shifts in the musical landscape, their positive energy has endured, and their timeless melodies are still attracting new fans. Whether they're revisiting old favorites or exploring new musical frontiers, they know exactly how to entertain an audience, and they’ll do it every chance they get!
