About Cage the Elephant
Cage the Elephant formed in Bowling Green, Kentucky, united by a shared vision among high school friends. Once known as Perfect Confusion, they rebranded after a fan told frontman Matt Shultz he needed to “cage the elephant,” likely a reference to his unstoppable energy on stage.
It was those antics that got them noticed by record execs at South by Southwest in 2007 and led to their signing, swiftly shifting their trajectory. The group decided they needed a change of scenery, and a move to England helped shape their early music and expand their fan base.
The release of their eponymous debut album, in 2008 in the UK and in 2009 in America, cemented their presence in the alternative rock scene. This initial success was further propelled by their single "Ain't No Rest for the Wicked," which found its way into the Borderlands video game.
Over the years, the band has been recognized for their evolution in sound, exploring genres from punk and blues to psychedelic rock. Thank You, Happy Birthday and Melophobia received critical acclaim, and Tell Me I'm Pretty and Social Cues earned Best Rock Album honors at the Grammys.
Shultz once said, “I just want to continue to make records that feel inspired as we write them.” It seems they’ve stuck by that sentiment, and it’s certainly working for them. As Cage continues to build on their sound and fill arenas, there’s no stopping this elephant any time soon.
