About Cage the Elephant

Cage the Elephant formed in Bowling Green, Kentucky, united by a shared vision among high school friends. Once known as Perfect Confusion, they rebranded after a fan told frontman Matt Shultz he needed to “cage the elephant,” likely a reference to his unstoppable energy on stage.

It was those antics that got them noticed by record execs at South by Southwest in 2007 and led to their signing, swiftly shifting their trajectory. The group decided they needed a change of scenery, and a move to England helped shape their early music and expand their fan base.

The release of their eponymous debut album, in 2008 in the UK and in 2009 in America, cemented their presence in the alternative rock scene. This initial success was further propelled by their single "Ain't No Rest for the Wicked," which found its way into the Borderlands video game.

Over the years, the band has been recognized for their evolution in sound, exploring genres from punk and blues to psychedelic rock. Thank You, Happy Birthday and Melophobia received critical acclaim, and Tell Me I'm Pretty and Social Cues earned Best Rock Album honors at the Grammys.

Shultz once said, “I just want to continue to make records that feel inspired as we write them.” It seems they’ve stuck by that sentiment, and it’s certainly working for them. As Cage continues to build on their sound and fill arenas, there’s no stopping this elephant any time soon.

These have been some of their most talked-about shows:

  • March 14, 2007: During the SXSW Music Festival, Cage the Elephant was booked for a showcase at the Club de Ville. Their stellar set caught the attention of Relentless Records, leading to a swift signing and marking the beginning of their ascent in the rock world.

  • February 27, 2011: Cage delivered a masterpiece at the historic Vic Theatre in Chicago. The intimate venue, with a capacity of around 1200, allowed the band to get up close and personal with fans, as they showed off songs from Thank You, Happy Birthday.

  • August 6, 2011: At the inaugural Kanrocksas Music Festival, Cage the Elephant stood out among a lineup that included Eminem, The Black Keys, Muse, Primus, and other heavy hitters. Shultz surfed the crowd during their opening song, setting the tone for their energetic show.

  • October 15, 2015: Cage debuted “Cold Cold Cold” and “Mess Around” from their album Tell Me I'm Pretty Cage at The Box in New York City, a venue famous for its exclusive nightly shows. The rest of the 14-song set featured a blend of songs from their impressive anthology.

  • August 3, 2017: On the main stage at Lollapalooza, Matt Shultz stripped down to his skivvies and was as visually arresting as the band was musically compelling. A cover of Wreckless Eric’s “Whole Wide World” was a highlight of a show that demonstrated a flair for theatricality.
