History
The Illinois State Fair is one of the oldest state fairs in America, with roots stretching back to 1853 when the first fair was held in Springfield. In those early years, the event was a purely agricultural affair — a platform for Illinois farmers to exhibit their produce and livestock, fostering competition and innovation across the state's farming communities. The fair moved between several Illinois cities before settling permanently at its current 366-acre Springfield site in 1894, where the oldest surviving structure on the grounds — a spacious two-level building with iron framing, brick walls, and segmented arched windows — still stands today.
The Grandstand was rebuilt in 1927 in an Art Deco style that remains a defining feature of the fairgrounds. From its earliest days, it served as the venue for harness racing — a tradition that continues to this day — and quickly expanded to host automobile and motorcycle races when competitive auto racing arrived at the Springfield Mile in 1910. The one-mile clay oval became one of the fastest and most famous dirt tracks in the world, holding five automobile racing world speed records and hosting national championship events continuously for over a century. It's the oldest track in the United States to do so.
As the decades rolled on, the Grandstand evolved into one of the premier stops on the "state fair circuit" — the network of fairground venues that became a recognized part of the American live-music industry, particularly in country music. The stage has hosted a remarkable range of artists over the years: The Who performed as an opening act for The Association in 1968, Bob Hope headlined with Barbara Eden, and the Grand Ole Opry brought Roy Acuff and the Jordanaires to Springfield during the golden age of country radio. In the modern era, the Grandstand has welcomed headliners including Tim McGraw, Miranda Lambert, Keith Urban, The Jonas Brothers, The Smashing Pumpkins, Snoop Dogg, Sheryl Crow, Mötley Crüe, Alanis Morissette, REO Speedwagon, and Brad Paisley — a testament to the venue's ability to attract nationally touring acts across every genre.
The fairgrounds itself earned recognition on the National Register of Historic Places in 1990 as a historic district, and today the 366-acre complex contains more than 100 permanent buildings, dozens of free entertainment stages, the Multi-Purpose Arena, the Coliseum, and the Exposition Building — making it far more than a fair. It's a year-round event campus and a living monument to Illinois heritage.
The Illinois State Fair Experience
A night at the Illinois State Fairgrounds during the annual State Fair is a full sensory immersion into Midwestern summer at its finest. The fairgrounds are open from 7:00 AM to midnight throughout the 11-day run, and the energy builds steadily from the morning livestock shows to the roar of the evening Grandstand headliner.
Food is a central pillar of the experience — and the Illinois State Fair takes it seriously. Dozens of food vendors line the midway and surrounding lanes, serving everything from deep-fried classics and corn dogs to creative fair specialties that push the boundaries of portable cuisine. The fair's Blue Ribbon recipes, compiled annually from competition winners, have become a beloved tradition in their own right. Beyond the food, the carnival midway offers rides and games for all ages, while free entertainment stages scattered throughout the grounds feature live music, demonstrations, and family-friendly programming all day long.
For 2026, the fair is celebrating the 100th anniversary of Route 66 with the theme "Miles of Smiles" — a fitting tribute, given that the historic highway runs directly through the Illinois State Fairgrounds. Gate 2 is home to the Route 66 Experience, a multiyear project by the Illinois Route 66 Scenic Byway that invites visitors to walk the Illinois stretch of Route 66 in microform, from Chicago to the Chain of Rocks Bridge. Elsewhere on the grounds, visitors will find livestock and agricultural competitions, 4-H exhibits, a Twilight Parade, a Lego contest, the Great American Sing-Along at the Surfside Social Club, and the beloved annual Butter Cow reveal.
For Grandstand events, please note that fair admission is required in addition to your event ticket — they are separate purchases. Children ages 2 and under are admitted to ticketed Grandstand events free if they sit on an adult's lap; ages 3 and up require a ticket. The Grandstand has adopted a clear bag policy: no bags or purses larger than 14" × 8", and no backpacks or duffle bags are allowed (exceptions are made for diaper bags and medical bags). Pre-show party upgrades are also available for select concerts, offering early entry, a food bar, entertainment, and giveaways.
Parking & Transportation
The Illinois State Fairgrounds is located just two miles from Interstate I-55 via the Sangamon Avenue exit (Exit 100B), making it easily accessible from Chicago, St. Louis, and throughout Central Illinois.
Driving & Parking
On-site parking is available throughout the fairgrounds. During the fair, the Illinois Department of Transportation changes traffic flow on surrounding streets to a one-way counterclockwise pattern to manage the volume of vehicles — plan accordingly and allow extra time, especially on weekend evenings and concert nights. Alternative approach routes include 5th Street and Dirksen Parkway. Seasonal parking passes can be purchased in advance online through the fair's digital ticketing partner, Etix. For full details on lots, maps, and options, visit our Illinois State Fairgrounds parking page.
Rideshare & Taxi
Uber, Lyft, and taxis provide convenient access to the fairgrounds. The designated rideshare pickup area is at the corner of Grandstand Avenue and Avenue of Flags. Using rideshare is a particularly good option on concert nights, as it eliminates the need to navigate post-show traffic and parking congestion.
Bus
The nearest bus stop is 8th & Percy, located just a short walk from the fairgrounds. Check with Springfield Mass Transit District (SMTD) for route and schedule information during fair dates, as service may be adjusted to accommodate fair traffic patterns.
Camping
The Illinois State Fairgrounds Campground is open during the fair and throughout much of the year. Reservations are not required or accepted — sites are available on a first-come, first-served basis. For fairgoers making a multi-day trip, camping on the grounds is one of the most convenient and affordable ways to experience the full run of illinois state fair events.
Accessibility
The Grandstand offers wheelchair-accessible seating on each level and a fully accessible elevator. When purchasing tickets, advise the box office of any accessibility requirements to ensure proper seating. Accessible restrooms are available in numerous buildings across the fairgrounds and are identified on the site map. A sign language interpreter is provided for all Grandstand events and is transmitted on the venue's video screen. Shaded seating areas and accessible picnic tables are located throughout the grounds, and air-conditioned buildings — including the Senior Center — offer relief from the August heat.
