The Iowa State Fair Experience
The Iowa State Fair is so much more than the Grandstand — it's an 11-day, 445-acre celebration that draws over a million visitors and offers something for every age, interest, and appetite.
The Butter Cow
No visit to the Iowa State Fair is complete without a pilgrimage to the Agriculture Building to see the iconic Butter Cow — a life-sized dairy cow sculpted from approximately 600 pounds of pure cream Iowa butter, standing 5½ feet tall and 8 feet long. The tradition dates back to 1911, and in more than 110 years, just five sculptors have had the honor. Current sculptor Sarah Pratt — who apprenticed for 15 years under legendary "Butter Cow Lady" Norma "Duffy" Lyon — now creates the cow alongside her daughters, Hannah and Grace. Each year, a companion sculpture joins the cow; past subjects have included Garth Brooks, Elvis, the American Gothic painting, Shawn Johnson, and — in 2023 — a trio honoring Iowa athletes Caitlin Clark, Jack Trice, and Kurt Warner. The 2026 companion sculpture, "Meet Me at the Pepsi Clock," celebrates Fair Spirit and the America250 theme.
Food
The Iowa State Fair is one of the great culinary destinations in the Midwest — if you're willing to eat it on a stick. More than 200 food vendors line the fairgrounds, serving everything from the legendary Barksdale's State Fair Cookies and classic corn dogs to inventive new creations that push the boundaries of portable cuisine. The fair debuts dozens of new food and drink items each year, and fairgoers take the annual new-food reveals seriously — it's one of the most anticipated announcements of the summer. Look for the fair's "Food on a Stick" guide and the "Value Priced Items" list to plan your route.
Free Entertainment
Beyond the paid Grandstand concerts, the Iowa State Fair offers a staggering amount of free entertainment included with gate admission. Multiple stages across the grounds host live music, comedy, magic, and family-friendly acts from morning to night — covering country, rock, pop, classic hits, and more. In addition to the free stages, the Grand Concourse itself is a show: buskers, performers, craft demonstrations, and people-watching that rivals any festival in the country.
Rides, Attractions & Competitions
The carnival midway offers thrill rides and family-friendly attractions, anchored by two iconic fair staples: the Giant Slide and Ye Old Mill — the oldest ride at the Iowa State Fair. Elwell Family Park hosts PRCA Pro Rodeo action and the Outlaw Truck & Tractor Pulls. Livestock shows and agricultural competitions fill the barns throughout all 11 days, celebrating Iowa's farming heritage. The Iowa State Fair Parade winds through the streets the evening before opening day, and the Queen Coronation adds a touch of tradition on the first Saturday.
History
The Iowa State Fair traces its roots to October 25–27, 1854, when the very first fair was held on six acres in the small southeastern Iowa town of Fairfield. A crowd of 7,000 to 10,000 showed up with a total budget of just $323. For its first quarter-century, the fair rotated among cities across eastern Iowa — Muscatine, Oskaloosa, Iowa City, Dubuque, Burlington, Clinton, Cedar Rapids, and Keokuk all hosted before the Iowa Legislature and the city of Des Moines appropriated funds to establish a permanent home in 1886 on the east side of the state capital. Pioneer Hall, the oldest original building still in use on the grounds today, dates to that era.
Since then, the Iowa State Fair has grown into one of the largest and most recognized agricultural expositions in the world — 445 acres of history, culture, and pure Midwestern pride. The Grandstand has been the centerpiece of the entertainment experience for generations, hosting legendary performers since the concert series began in 1956. Sonny and Cher drew a record 26,200 fans in 1972. Johnny Cash packed in 23,500 across two shows in 1970. The Beach Boys attracted 25,402 in 1975. In the modern era, the Grandstand's reputation has only grown — the 2025 concert series drew an all-time record 131,755 concertgoers across its run. The fair has been cancelled only six times in its 170-plus-year history: once in 1898 for the World's Fair in Omaha, four years during World War II (1942–1945), and once in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Through it all, the Iowa State Fair has remained a civic, cultural, and social touchstone — the kind of tradition that brings families back generation after generation.
