The History of Denver Nuggets Basketball

Founded in 1967 as the Denver Rockets, the modern-day Nuggets have been a franchise for over five decades. The team's early years were marked by success, making the playoffs in all nine seasons of the ABA. In 1976, the organization joined the NBA, bringing their high-flying style to professional basketball’s most prominent stage.

The new settings introduced some struggles, but Denver gradually established itself as a competitive force. In the 1980s, led by stars such as Alex English and Kiki Vandeweghe, they made the playoffs for nine consecutive years, reaching the Western Conference Finals in 1985. Success continued into the 1990s, with standouts like Dikembe Mutombo and Mahmoud Abdul-Rahim leading the Nuggets to another postseason appearance in 1994.

Then, the turn of the millennium saw a period of rebuilding, until the late 2000s when fortunes began to turn. Anthony Carmelo, a prolific scorer and leader, helped his squad make the playoffs every season from 2004 to 2008. In 2009, they reached the Western Conference Finals for the first time in their NBA history.

More recently, Denver has emerged as one of the NBA's most dynamic teams. Considered a contender with an incredibly bright future ahead, they are expected to continue to captivate fans with their electrifying play. Find your Nuggets tickets today, and you can witness the fun firsthand!

The Nuggets Basketball Schedule

Before you make your way to the venue, you'll need to decide which matchups you're most excited to see. GoTickets provides up-to-date NBA schedules, so you won't have to go far to find out who's on the docket. With so many talented teams vying for the championship, picking the right opponents can be the hardest part!

One of Denver’s fiercest rivals is the Utah Jazz. Their battle dates back to the NBA-ABA merger in 1976. Things have only intensified with both squads sharing space in the Northwest Division of the Western Conference of the NBA. During the 1998 playoffs, when the Jazz defeated the Nuggets, they cemented their dominance. To this day, their meetings are unpredictable and unforgettable.

Another longstanding feud is with the Los Angeles Lakers. Their encounters have been legendary, including the 2009 Western Conference Finals and the 2020 NBA Western Conference Finals. Both clubs are always motivated to outdo each other, making each clash extremely contentious.

Aside from those adversaries, the Nuggets and Minnesota Timberwolves are always an entertaining pairing that often produces high-scoring affairs. Similarly, their skirmishes with the Oklahoma City Thunder are a treat for fans.
