The History of Brooklyn Nets Basketball

Born into the American Basketball Association (ABA) in 1967, the New Jersey Americans, as they were initially known, embarked on a journey that would intertwine with the evolution of professional basketball. Despite facing challenges in their first season, a relocation to Long Island in 1968 and a name change to the New York Nets ushered in a new era.

The Nets embraced a fast-paced, high-scoring style that captivated audiences, leading them to ABA championship victories in 1974 and 1976. As the ABA merged with the NBA, they continued their pursuit of excellence led by notorious players like Julius Erving and Darryl Dawkins. Irving, better known as Dr. J, was a 15-time NBA All-Star and a two-time league MVP famous for his smooth moves. The latter, fellow All-Star “Chocolate Thunder,” was known for his intimidating presence and powerful dunks.

Their reputation for electrifying plays and unwavering determination made competitors take another look at this team from the Big Apple. But in 1977, the squad went back to their Jersey roots. At the Meadowlands in the ‘80s, the club struggled to find consistent success, showing periods of promise followed by utter frustration. Despite reaching the NBA Finals in 2002 and 2003, they were swept by the Los Angeles Lakers, leaving fans yearning for a championship return.

In 2012, a new chapter unfolded as the Nets made the move across the river once again. This time, they wound up in Brooklyn, where they embraced their new home. Under the leadership of star players like Kevin Garnett, Paul Pierce, and Deron Williams, they experienced a resurgence, reaching the playoffs three times in their first seven seasons. Still, championship glory has slipped through the fingers of these resilient hoopsters.

Today, as the Brooklyn Nets continue to strive for greatness, their sights are set on extending their championship legacy. If you buy those Nets tickets you’ve been thinking about, you might just be there for the next big moment!

Before you start planning your trip, a crucial decision awaits—which game will you choose? GoTickets provides up-to-date NBA schedules, so you won't have to go far to see who’s on the docket. Still, while every game brings its own brand of excitement, there are a few matchups that might stand out.

Watch the calendar for fellow Eastern Conference clubs like the Philadelphia 76ers and the Toronto Raptors. Additionally, interconference foes like the Golden State Warriors and the LA Lakers make things interesting. You can’t really go wrong, but it’s always best to find a game you think might exceed your expectations!

If you’re really into long-standing rivalries, the Battle of the Boroughs between the Nets from Brooklyn and the NY Knicks from Manhattan is epic! Competing since the early days of the ABA, the teams have met in the playoffs on numerous occasions. With squads from the same city vying for supremacy, you never know what’s in store. The only sure thing is that every encounter will be full of intensity.

The Boston Celtics matchup always delivers! Although the men in green have won a staggering number of championships in comparison, these teams have been paired up in the playoffs on numerous occasions. They always play like they have a score to settle, putting their games on the “must-see” list every season.

Other intriguing adversaries in the East include the Milwaukee Bucks and the Miami Heat. If you’d prefer to see a West Coast club, try the Los Angeles Lakers or the Denver Nuggets. You can’t go wrong seeing any storied franchises or prime contenders when they come to town!

Barclays Center Information

Barclays Center is a multi-purpose arena that opened its doors in 2012. In addition to serving as the home of the Nets, this state-of-the-art facility is also a popular place for premier concerts, championship boxing, and family entertainment.

The venue offers a variety of amenities to over 17,000 fans, including a luxury suite level, a courtside club, and a plethora of food and beverage options. Its distinguishing features include a 60-foot-wide retractable roof, an 18-foot-tall video scoreboard, and two bus elevators that transport vehicles directly from the street level to the loading docks below ground.

Sections 107–109 have great elevated views and are located in the middle of the court, but the corresponding sections often offer similar views at a more affordable price. Sections 202–205 are in the family zone. If you like to sit behind the players, check out sections 7 and 9. On a budget? Consider sections 207–209.

Parking

The closest parking lots are the Atlantic Avenue Garage and the Pacific Street Garage. Both self-parking and valet parking. The Dean Street Garage, located at 475 Dean Street, is a bit farther from the arena but a pedestrian bridge makes getting to Barclays Center a breeze.

Finding vacancies during events can be a struggle, so we highly recommend reserving parking at the time of your Nets ticket purchase to prevent unnecessary delays when you arrive.

Alternative Transportation

The venue is easily accessible by public transportation. Several subway lines, bus routes, and even a ferry service can transport you with ease. If traveling by train, the 2, 3, 4, 5, B, D, N, Q, and R lines will take you to the Atlantic Avenue-Barclays Center station right below your destination. Alternatively, the Long Island Rail Road Atlantic Terminal station is across the street.

City buses B41 and B45 stop directly in front of Barclays Center on Atlantic Avenue, and buses B12 and B63 will drop you off a short walk away. If you want to take a ferry, the South Brooklyn route is the way to go. No matter how you choose to arrive, it’s important to plan ahead and leave yourself ample time.
