About The Book of Mormon

The Book of Mormon follows two young Mormon missionaries, Elder Price and Elder Cunningham, who find themselves in Uganda, far from their comfort zone. Elder Price is an enthusiastic go-getter, dreaming of an epic mission, while Elder Cunningham takes on the role of his well-meaning but socially awkward sidekick.

The narrative weaves through their mishaps and misadventures, with songs like "Hello" and "I Believe" capturing their earnest yet often comically misguided efforts to spread their faith. Elder Price struggles to maintain his optimism, while Elder Cunningham, who is not as familiar with the scriptures, begins improvising his own version of the Mormon teachings with hilarious results.

The Book of Mormon’s Entertainment Connections

It took a talented creative team and cast to make The Book of Mormon a success. Many of those who have worked on the production have played significant roles in other Broadway shows, racked up impressive entertainment credentials, and are known for their pop culture connections:

  • Award-winning creative partners Trey Parker and Matt Stone conceptualized the musical, but their first claim to fame was South Park, the animated adult sitcom, and the 1999 film based on the TV series. Their work has consistently been characterized by a blend of satirical humor and irreverent social commentary.

  • Co-creator Robert Lopez was the youngest EGOT recipient and the only person ever  to earn a double EGOT. He has won Emmy Awards for WandaVision, Wonder Pets!, and We the People, Grammy Awards for The Book of Mormon and Frozen (the film), Oscars for Coco and Frozen, and Tony Awards for Avenue Q and The Book of Mormon

  • Casey Nicholaw, the director and choreographer, won his first Tony Award for Best Direction of a Musical for his work on The Book of Mormon in 2011. He has also garnered critical acclaim for his choreography and direction on Aladdin, Something Rotten, Tuck Everlasting, Mean Girls, The Prom, and Some Like It Hot.

  • Josh Gad, who originated the role of Elder Arnold Cunningham, has had numerous television, film, and Broadway credits. Among other projects, he has starred alongside Kaley Cuoco and Kevin Hart in The Wedding Ringer, appeared with Adam Sandler and Peter Dinklage in Pixels, and co-starred with Billy Crystal on the FX comedy series “The Comedians.”

  • Prior to earning a Tony nomination for his performance as Elder Kevin Price, Andrew Rannells debuted on Broadway as Link Larkin in Hairspray and played Bob Gaudio in Jersey Boys. In addition to several TV and film credits, he has since appeared in Hamilton, Falsettos, The Boys in the Band, and Gutenberg! The Musical!.

  • Nikki M. James, who originated the role of Nabulungi, earned a Tony Award for Best Featured Actress in a Musical for her role as the love interest of Elder Cunningham. Her Broadway debut came in 2001 as Sabina Temple in The Adventures of Tom Sawyer, and she has graced NYC stages as Lorraine in All Shook Up and Éponine Thénardier in the revival of Les Misérables.

  • The Book of Mormon is currently running at the Eugene O'Neill Theatre, previously known as the Forrest Theatre and the Coronet Theatre. The venue, which opened in 1925, has hosted its share of hit musicals. In the 21st century alone, audiences have flocked to the theater to see Tony Award-winning musicals including Nine, Sweeney Todd, and Spring Awakening

Theater Etiquette

Stepping into the magical world of live theater is an experience like no other! Just remember that it’s necessary to learn about and respect the unspoken rules of the theater. Understanding these guidelines ensures a harmonious and memorable experience for everyone:

  1. Arriving early allows you to immerse yourself in the theater's atmosphere, review the Playbill, and get comfortable.

  2. Pay attention to announcements and lighting cues so you are seated and settled before the actors take the stage.

  3. Adhere to the theater's strict policy on late seating to avoid disruptions and ensure a seamless experience for everyone.

  4. Unless otherwise instructed, acknowledge the “fourth wall,” the invisible barrier that separates the audience from the actors.

  5. Be mindful of your behavior; avoid unnecessary noise and movements to respect the shared experience of fellow audience members.

  6. Using binoculars is fine for a better view, but ensure it doesn't disturb others or obstruct their vantage points.

  7. Applause is usually reserved for the end of show-stopping songs and the curtain call. If you’re unsure when to clap, follow the majority.

  8. Standing ovations are a powerful expression of appreciation, but they are optional and based on personal preference.
