The History of Philadelphia 76ers Basketball

The 76ers’ history is a testament to their resilience and ability to adapt to the ever-changing landscape of the NBA. Founded in 1949 as the Syracuse Nationals, the team quickly established itself as a force to be reckoned with, capturing their first NBA championship in 1955, led by George Yardley and Paul Seymour.

In 1963, the Nationals moved to the City of Brotherly Love and were rebranded as the 76ers. The new identity took hold, and the Sixers immediately made their mark on the league. In 1967, with the help of Wilt Chamberlain, they beat the Boston Celtics in five games and claimed their first title for Philly.

They continued to excel in the 1970s, reaching the NBA Finals a remarkable six times. The charismatic Julius Erving, affectionately known as "Dr. J," captivated crowds with his legendary dunks, and the squad’s high-flying style and steadfast determination were a huge draw.

However, the '80s and ‘90s saw periods of success and struggle. Led by the dominant Moses Malone, the 76ers captured their third NBA championship in 1983, but things quieted down until a surge in the late 1990s got people excited again. Allen Iverson brought his own style to the league and led his club to their first Finals in almost 20 years. Unfortunately, it never culminated in a title, and fans were left feeling deflated.

Throughout the 21st century, Philadelphia has embarked on a remarkable transformation, adopting the motto "Trust the Process" to signify the organization’s commitment to long-term success. After years of focusing on acquiring young talent, they believe they have a strong foundation for the future of the franchise. See the next big moment live—buy your 76ers tickets today.

The 76ers Basketball Schedule

The 76ers' schedule is always packed with tempting matchups against some of the league's top teams. Fans have ample opportunities to witness electrifying basketball, but of course, everyone wants to pick a game with high-stakes potential and all the drama that comes with it. It’s tough to choose just one!

Rivalries are a great place to start. A battle with the Boston Celtics has been brewing since the 1950s and 1960s. Both teams were among the most dominant in the NBA back then. Now, any time either squad shows any promise, things heat up again. In recent years, that’s been the case, as they’ve been paired in the playoffs several times. This makes their meetings must-see events.

As far as the rest of the Atlantic Division is concerned, the teams from New York up the ante due to playing histories and close proximity. The Toronto Raptors have gone back and forth with Philly in the playoffs in recent years.

Beyond their immediate division, the Miami Heat and the Atlanta Hawks have given the 76ers a tough time, and everyone in the league seems to have a common enemy in the Milwaukee Bucks, who seem to have made their way onto everyone’s radar.

In the Western Conference, it’s always fun to see franchises with winning records, star power, and huge national fan bases. You’ll find that in the Denver Nuggets, Los Angeles Lakers, and the Golden State Warriors.

Wells Fargo Center Information

The Wells Fargo Center home has hosted some of the biggest and most beloved rosters in NBA history as well as Flyers hockey and Wings lacrosse games, premier concerts, monster truck rallies, entertainment on ice, and more.

Aside from the usual courtside and club seats where you can find spectacular views and premium amenities for a price, sections 101–102 and sections 112–113 offer some of the best views in the bowl. The 76ers sit in front of section 102, while the visiting team sets up near section 124.

Families typically prefer the upper level, with sections 202–204 providing a convenient place near concessions. Budget-conscious fans can enjoy impressive views from the upper-level corners and sidelines without breaking the bank. And, finally, if it’s the party you crave, you’ll find your people around sections 217–218.

Parking

Located in the heart of Philadelphia, the sports complex is easily accessible by public transportation and is surrounded by a vibrant array of restaurants, bars, and attractions. There are several official parking lots conveniently located around the Wells Fargo Center, and GoTickets offers buyers a chance to reserve parking passes when they purchase Sixers tickets.

To get to the official lots, if you’re coming from the PA Turnpike, take the Northeast Extension (I-476 S) to Exit 16. Follow I-76 to Exit 349 for the Sports Complex, and make a right onto Broad Street.

Those approaching from I-95 S can get off at Broad Street (Exit 17) or Packer Avenue (Exit 19) and follow the signs.

Alternative Transportation

If you’d prefer not to drive, the Southeastern Pennsylvania Transit Authority has options. There is a subway stop right next to the venue, and the SEPTA Regional Rail lines connect various parts of the greater metropolitan area to the city. Fans can use these services to reach 30th Street Station or Suburban Station and transfer to the Broad Street Line to get to the venue.

Coming from Jersey? The PATCO high-speed rail connects NJ to Philly, providing an efficient way to travel to the game. And if you’re staying in the vicinity, some hotels and other businesses provide shuttle services for ticket holders.
