Notable Creighton University Basketball Players

The Creighton Bluejays men's basketball program has been a launching pad for talent aiming for the NBA. This list highlights players who have made the leap from Creighton to the professional leagues, showcasing their significant contributions and achievements:

  • Paul Silas (1961–1964): Drafted 10th overall by St. Louis in 1964, Paul Silas was renowned for his defensive dominance. Throughout the course of his 16-year playing career, he contributed to the success of the Hawks, Suns, Celtics, Nuggets, and SuperSonics. He was a two-time All-Star and won three championships, then went on to coach for 22 years. Silas was inducted into the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame in 2017, and his Creighton number (35) has been retired.

  • Bob Portman (1966–1969): After three active seasons with the Bluejays, Portman left Creighton as the all-time leading scorer. He once earned 51 points against the Wisconsin Panthers, a single-game scoring record that still stands. Picked by the Denver Rockets in the ABA Draft and chosen 7th overall by the San Francisco Warriors in the NBA Draft, Portman chose the National Basketball Association and enjoyed a productive four-year professional basketball career.

  • Benoit Benjamin (1982–1985): A first-team Parade All-American in college, Benjamin stood out for his towering presence and defensive capabilities. He was drafted third overall by the LA Clippers in 1985, and during his best season (1988-89), he averaged 16.4 ppg and set a franchise record for blocked shots per game. Over the course of his 15-year career, he accumulated over 2,500 blocks while playing for nine teams including the Nets and the Bucks.

  • Kyle Korver (1999–2003): A two-time conference Player of the Year, Korver was selected by the New Jersey Nets and then traded to the Philadelphia 76ers in 2003. He went on to become one of the NBA's most elite sharpshooters. In 2015, while playing with the Hawks, he was part of the All-Star team and won the league’s Sportsmanship Award. He retired with one of the highest three-point shooting percentages in history and has since built an executive career with Atlanta.

  • Doug McDermott (2010–2014): Named the National College Player of the Year in 2014, McDermott was chosen 11th overall by the Denver Nuggets but was subsequently traded to the Chicago Bulls. He has made a name for himself as a proficient scorer, maintaining a career three-point shooting percentage of ~40%. He has contributed to multiple teams, including the OKC Thunder, NY Knicks, Dallas Mavericks, San Antonio Spurs, and Indiana Pacers.
