The History of Washington Wizards Basketball

In 1961, the Chicago Packers were established as one of the founding teams of the Basketball Association of America (BAA), the precursor to the NBA. The early years were marked by struggles, as the team struggled to find its footing in the competitive league.

However, the 1970s ushered in an era of unprecedented success. Under the leadership of Hall of Famer Wes Unseld, the club, now in D.C. and known as the Capital Bullets, captured four Eastern Conference titles and an NBA championship in 1978.

The 1980s and early 1990s were decades of rebuilding, but the Wizards' fighting spirit remained undaunted. Then, in 1997, the team underwent a rebrand, becoming the Washington Wizards, a name that better reflected their dynamic style of play.

This began a resurgence just as the league entered the 21st century. By 2010, star point guard John Wall ignited a new era of excitement. His leadership and electrifying on-court performances propelled the Wizards to four playoff appearances in five seasons, rekindling the passion of the Wizards Nation.

Today, with a blend of talented young players and experienced veterans, the Wizards are poised to continue their legacy and make their loyal fan base proud. Show your support! Buy Wizards tickets so you can root them on from the stands.

The Wizards Basketball Schedule

As a member of the Eastern Conference's Southeast Division, the Washington Wizards navigate a competitive landscape filled with formidable foes. For starters, the Orlando Magic are hungry for a title and willing to eliminate anyone who might stand in their way.

The Miami Heat and Atlanta Hawks aren’t exactly pushovers. Either one of them could give Washington a run for its money. Win or lose, these opponents would deliver on drama. The Heat have been a consistent contender in recent years, and the Hawks might still hold a grudge from the opening round in 2017.

Other respectable rivals are scattered throughout the conference and include the Boston Celtics and Philadelphia 76ers. The Celtics and Wizards share a long and storied rivalry, fueled by intense playoff pairings and a shared history of success. Their meetings always feature high-level play.

D.C.’s proximity to Pennsylvania adds a layer of intensity to every encounter with the Sixers. Both teams are known for their physicality and defensive prowess, making their games a battle of attrition. Add the fire of the fans to the mix, and you have a thrilling pairing.

In the Western Conference, the OKC Thunder and Golden State Warriors are intriguing, and the Los Angeles Lakers are always a big draw. These are marquee matchups with enough substance to make them prime picks for your big day.

Capital One Arena Information

Washington calls Capital One Arena their home and invites over 20,000 people to watch them play in this state-of-the-art facility at least 41 times each season. The surrounding neighborhood is full of restaurants, shops, and other businesses, so there’s always something to do before or after an event.

When the Wizards aren’t in town, the venue hosts the Capitals ice hockey team, the Harlem Globetrotters, NCAA Division I men’s basketball, figure skating competitions, WWE matches, Disney on Ice, top-name concerts, and more.

In addition to premium courtside seats, club seats, and luxury suites, guests can enjoy spectacular views and desirable amenities throughout the building. The Capitals sit in front of Section 100 and Section 121, while Section 101 offers the best view of the visiting players.

If you’re on a budget, the 400 level is where you’ll likely want to be. Sections 401–403 are well-suited to families, with concessions and restrooms easily accessible. Those coming to party should position themselves around Sections 426–428.

Ready for Your Wizards Game?

The second you walk through the doors of Capital One Arena, you are transported into a fan’s paradise. Everywhere you look, you see reminders of the club’s biggest achievements and other pivotal moments.

As you make your way to your seat, your eyes scan the bowl, and as you try to take it all in, it’s almost overwhelming in the best possible way. The dancers perform like the pros they are, each movement perfectly synchronized to the beat. Seeing them in person makes what they do even more impressive.

G-Wiz, a whirlwind of fur and energy who roams the arena, can be seen taking selfies with fans and spreading positive vibes. Whether he’s a patriotic flightless raven or a creature from another planet is up for debate, but there’s no question he’s good at his job.

The building goes dark for a moment before a carefully orchestrated series of colorful flashes illuminates the arena. Red, white, and blue are prominent around the building, and this light show is no exception. The announcer welcomes everyone before getting into player intros.

Names of players on the opposing team are met with quiet claps and a few boos, but each Washington hoopster is practically given a standing ovation. Teams make their way to the benches, where they are met with high fives and smiles.

It’s tip-off time! The game is underway. Every possession matters, every shot holds the potential to swing the momentum. The crowd hangs on every move, their reactions echoing through the arena, creating waves of emotions.

This is what you’ve always wanted, but in person, it's even better than you could have ever imagined. All you have to do to experience it firsthand is find your dream Wizards tickets and head to the arena. Why wait?
