Notable Colorado State Rams Men's Basketball Players

When you see an NCAA Division I basketball game, you never know what—or whom—you might witness. You might even be getting a peek at the next superstar! The Colorado State men's basketball program has been a springboard for talent, with several players making the leap to the NBA. These are some of the successful Rams who have transitioned from domination on the collegiate courts to making the professional leagues:

  • Bill Green (1960–1963): In 1963, Green was drafted by the Boston Celtics of the National Basketball Association, the Boston Red Sox of Major League Baseball, and the Dallas Cowboys of the National Football League. Unfortunately, an intense fear of flying prevented him from pursuing a career in sports. Instead, CSU's first NCAA All-American made a positive impact on future generations as a teacher and principal in the New York City public school system.

  • Lonnie Wright (1963–1966): Wright was drafted into the NBA by the Hawks and, although he never played football in college, attracted the interest of the Dallas Cowboys. At first, he chose the pigskin path and played for a short stint with the Denver Broncos. However, in 1968, he made his way back to the hardwood, playing for five seasons with the Denver Rockets of the American Basketball Association, where he scored 1,130 points and averaged 16.4 points per game.

  • Pat Durham (1985–1989): At Colorado State, Durham was known for his scoring and rebounding abilities and was a two-time first-team All-WAC selection. In 1989, he was drafted by the Dallas Mavericks. During his NBA career, he lent his talents to the Mavs, Warriors, and Timberwolves, spending his best season (1994–95) with Minnesota. He went on to play professionally in Europe, with teams in France, Italy, Greece, and Turkey.

  • Jason Smith (2004–2007): Smith, a skilled big man for the Rams, made an immediate impact at CSU as the Mountain West Freshman of the Year. He was drafted 20th overall by the Miami Heat in 2007, then traded to the Philadelphia 76ers. Known for his scoring and shot-blocking, he had a solid NBA career with multiple teams, including the New Orleans Pelicans, New York Knicks, Orlando Magic, Washington Wizards, and Milwaukee Bucks.

  • Colton Iverson (2012–2013): After making an impression as a force in the paint, known for his rebounding and scoring abilities, Iverson was drafted 53rd overall by the Indiana Pacers in 2013. That same night, he was traded to the Boston Celtics. After playing in the Summer League, he signed a contract with Beşiktaş Integral Forex of the Turkish Basketball League. During the 2016–17 season, he helped Maccabi Tel Aviv win the Israeli Cup.
