About Deep Purple

Deep Purple formed in 1967 in Hertford, England, first exploring psychedelic elements and progressive rock before moving to a heavier sound. By 1970, with the release of their groundbreaking album Deep Purple in Rock, they had already begun to establish a reputation as hard rock pioneers. This transition was largely attributed to the arrival of Ian Gillan and Roger Glover in 1969. In fact, Deep Purple set the record as the world's loudest band when they reached 117 decibels during a set at London’s Rainbow Theatre in 1972.

Their biggest commercial breakthrough came with "Smoke on the Water" the following year. The song tells the true story of a fire during a Frank Zappa concert at the Montreux Casino on the shores of Lake Geneva, an event witnessed by Deep Purple members. Widely known for Ritchie Blackmore’s iconic guitar riff, echoed by Jon Lord on a Hammond C3 organ, the single reached number four on the US Billboard chart. That paved the way for the success of the full-length album Machine Head, which peaked at number seven on the Billboard 200.

More chart-topping tracks and albums followed, and undeterred by lineup changes along the way, Deep Purple continued to build their loyal fan base and shape their genre for future generations. They earned a Legend Award at the 2008 World Music Awards and an Innovator Award at the 2011 Classic Rock Awards in London. In 2016, they reached the pinnacle of their career when they were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. With more performances on the horizon, the group continues to cement their legacy as titans of the industry, pushing boundaries, just as they have for over five decades.

Deep Purple’s Setlist

Their songs, rich with powerful guitar solos and other instrumental wizardry, translate into explosive performances on stage, drawing fans into the intensity of the moment. When you catch them live, expect some of these songs to grace the setlist:

  1. Smoke on the Water

  2. Highway Star

  3. Perfect Strangers

  4. Black Night

  5. Lazy

  6. Space Truckin’

  7. Hush

  8. Keyboard Solo

  9. Strange Kind of Woman

  10. The Well-Dressed Guitar

Live Moments That Made Headlines

Deep Purple's enduring appeal is due, in no small part, to their sensational live performances, which perfectly capture the essence of their energy. These live appearances have elevated their stature and provided fans with memories for a lifetime. Each of the following events showcases the band's ability to surprise, excite, and connect with audiences around the globe:

  • March 1, 1972: In Copenhagen at the K.B. Hallen, Deep Purple treated fans to a stellar set that began with “Highway Star” and featured “Strange Kind of Woman,” “Child in Time,” “Lazy,” and “Lucille.” Additionally, it was the only time during the 1972 tour that "Fireball” made the setlist, as it came to be replaced by fan favorite "Smoke on the Water.” The entire performance was captured on the album Live In Denmark '72, later released as the Live in Concert 72/73 DVD.

  • April 6, 1974: At the California Jam festival, with over 250,000 people in attendance, complications with the scheduled start time and out-of-tune instruments caused frustration. Ritchie Blackmore decided to take his anger out on the equipment during the set, swinging his guitar at a camera, and setting the stage ablaze. Deep Purple had to be airlifted from the venue in a helicopter to evade arrest. The event went down as one of the most chaotic shows in history.

  • July 8–9, 1985: During the Perfect Strangers tour, the classic Deep Purple lineup of Ritchie Blackmore, Ian Gillan, Roger Glover, Jon Lord, and Ian Paice were on stage together for the first time since 1973. Their powerful performances at the Omnisport in Paris were broadcast on German television. However, technical difficulties made a live album impractical, so the events only live on through poor-quality footage and stories from fans who witnessed the shows.

  • November 17, 1993: At Helsinki's Ice Hall, Ritchie Blackmore gave his final performance with Deep Purple. They were interested in pursuing a more modern sound, and he was not, preferring more traditional melodies. This was his second departure due to creative differences, and while it marked the end of an era, it was also seen as the beginning of a new chapter. After playing one last memorable and melancholy solo, the famous guitarist forged his own path.

  • April 8, 2016: After a brilliant introduction by longtime fan Lars Ulrich of Metallica, Deep Purple celebrated their Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction. Their mind-blowing renditions of "Highway Star" and "Smoke on the Water" demonstrated exactly why they deserved the honor. Despite drama surrounding the absence of Ritchie Blackmore, the momentous occasion was one for the ages, with homage paid to past members, including the late Jon Lord and Tommy Bolin.
