About KALEO
KALEO started making waves during their school days in Mosfellsbær. Best friends since elementary school, frontman Jökull Júlíusson, drummer Davíð Antonsson, and bassist Daniel Kristjánsson began playing together at the age of 17. Their lineup was solidified in 2012 with the addition of guitarist Rubin Pollock. After winning a battle of the bands competition in Iceland, they began to attract regional attention, setting the stage for their eventual rise to international fame.
They landed a few off-site gigs during the 2012 Iceland Airwaves music festival, and their recording of “Vor í Vaglaskógi” led to a signing with Sena, Iceland’s largest label, and the release of their self-titled debut album. However, the group’s global breakthrough would wait until August of 2015, when their single "Way Down We Go,'' was released by Elektra Records and soared to number one on the US Billboard Alternative Songs and Rock Airplay charts.
"Way Down We Go' has since been featured in films, television shows, and video games. It was used in “Collateral Beauty,” helped promote the fourth season of Orange is the New Black, and can be heard in EA Sports games FIFA 16 and FIFA 23. KALEO’s 2016 album A/B was certified platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America and earned them numerous accolades, including a Grammy nomination for “No Good.”
KALEO’s distinctive sound, heavily influenced by natural landscapes, has resonated with a wide audience. Integrating Icelandic music elements into their work has not only promoted their cultural heritage but also brought attention to the country’s music scene. As they continue to release new music and tour, they are poised to remain a significant force in the industry, bridging cultural gaps and adding to their ever-growing fanbase.

Live Moments That Made Headlines
Known for their powerful stage presence, KALEO delivers concerts that captivate audiences with intense guitar riffs, dramatic vocals, and immersive soundscapes. Each show is a journey, shifting from high-energy anthems to hauntingly beautiful ballads, showcasing their musical versatility. Every concert is a memorable experience for fans, but these have been among the band’s most buzzworthy appearances:
-
March 2015: KALEO gained major press coverage during their debut at South by Southwest, including mentions in Esquire's "40 Bands You Need to Hear" and NPR's "Austin 100." They treated KGSR listeners to "All the Pretty Girls" during a live morning broadcast and stopped by B+Q's BBQ for the 2015 Day Party. The following year, they made the news again, playing for the people in line outside W Austin.
-
August 2015: The group ignited a media firestorm when they filmed their video for “Way Down We Go” in front of a small audience in the dormant magma chamber of Thrihnukagigur, a volcanic attraction on the Reykjanes Peninsula. They followed that up with a performance of “Save Yourself” on a floating iceberg, “Break My Baby” at Thridrangar lighthouse, and “Skinny” in front of the erupting Fagragdalsfjall volcano.
-
September 2016: KALEO made their American late-night television debut on Jimmy Kimmel Live! An eager audience roared with approval of their performance on the outdoor stage, which included renditions of “Way Down We Go” and “No Good.” During the latter song, percussionist Davíð Antonsson alternated between his drum set and a tambourine. Jökull Júlíusson's voice drew Hozier and Rag'n'Bone Man comparisons.
-
June 2018: Following an opening set of Southern soul from singer-songwriter Anderson East, KALEO rocked their second show at the Red Rocks Amphitheatre in Morrison, Colorado. Amidst the picturesque sandstone monoliths, they kicked things off with “Broken Bones,” got fans grooving to a cover of Cher’s "Bang Bang (My Baby Shot Me Down)," and answered the crowd’s call for an encore with “Glass House” and “Rock n’ Roller.”
-
April 2022: One night after selling out the historic Ryman Auditorium, KALEO broke new ground by becoming the first Icelandic artists to perform for a packed house at the world-famous Grand Ole Opry. They found it fitting to mark the occasion with the world premiere of “Lonely Cowboy,” and JJ looked the part, standing in the iconic circle wearing a white fringed shirt with matching pants, and (of course) a requisite pair of boots.
