About Roberto Tapia

Roberto Tapia was born in  San Diego, California, and raised in Culiacán, Sinaloa, Mexico, where he enjoyed a childhood rich in musical education. He began singing at the age of nine, studied clarinet, guitar, and percussion at the prestigious Difocur School of Music in Culiacán, and was playing with the Symphony of Sinaloa by his teenage years. At 17, after honing his skills in playing dance halls in San Diego and Tijuana, he made his professional debut with El Lobito de Sinaloa.

His growing exposure led to a recording contract with Sony International, and he released a self-entitled Norteña album in 2002, combining elements of electronica and hip-hop with a traditional Mexican sound. His albums have consistently been well-received, and in 2012, El Muchacho earned the top spot on both the Top Latin Albums Chart and the Regional Mexican Sales Chart. The following year, he began a two-year stint as a coach on "La Voz Kids,” a Spanish-language children’s version of The Voice.

In addition to mentoring young musicians, Tapia has helped to popularize the banda and Norteño genres in the US. He has been recognized at the Billboard Latin Music Awards, where he was nominated for Regional Mexican Songs Artist of the Year in 2015 and 2016. His upcoming projects promise the same energy and creative innovation that have defined his career, and his continued amalgamations of traditional and contemporary music are sure to have a lasting impact on Regional Mexican music.
