History

For decades, Orlando's performing arts scene lived in the shadow of the city's world-famous theme parks. The Bob Carr Performing Arts Center — originally opened as the Orlando Municipal Auditorium in 1927 — served as the city's primary performance venue for generations, but by the early 2000s, it was aging, undersized, and unable to attract the caliber of touring productions that a city of Orlando's stature deserved. The dream of a world-class performing arts center had been discussed since the 1990s, but it wasn't until a coalition of civic leaders, philanthropists, and elected officials came together in the mid-2000s that the vision began to take shape.

In 2007, Orange County voters approved the use of Tourist Development Tax revenue to help fund the project, alongside contributions from the City of Orlando, the State of Florida, and over $200 million in private philanthropy — including a transformative gift from the Dr. P. Phillips Foundation, the charitable legacy of Dr. Philip Phillips, a citrus industry pioneer whose family had shaped Central Florida for generations. The center was named in his honor. Award-winning architect Barton Myers was selected to design what he would later call "one of the most ambitious performing arts centers designed today," with the goal of creating something iconic for Orlando that would fit seamlessly into the scale of downtown.

Groundbreaking took place on June 23, 2011, but economic conditions forced the project to be split into two phases.
