About Burton Cummings

Burton Cummings, a renowned Canadian singer-songwriter, was born and raised in Winnipeg, Manitoba, After capturing local attention with The Deverons, he made it big when he replaced Bob Ashley as keyboardist for The Guess Who, one of the country’s most successful rock bands of the 1960s and 1970s. A few months later, at just 18 years of age, he stepped in to fill the void left by band founder and frontman Chad Allan, singing classics like "American Woman" and "These Eyes.”.

After parting ways with The Guess Who in the 1970s, Cummings embarked on a successful solo career, releasing a string of critically acclaimed albums and chart-topping singles. His solo work showcased his versatility as an artist, spanning genres from rock and pop to blues and jazz. With his soulful vocals and poetic lyrics, the talented performer continued to captivate audiences with songs like "Stand Tall" and "My Own Way to Rock."

Throughout his career, Burton Cummings has received numerous accolades, including multiple RPM Awards, Juno Awards, honors from the Society of Composers, Authors and Music Publishers, and inductions into the Canadian Music Hall of Fame and the Canadian Songwriters Hall of Fame. His contributions to the music industry have earned him the respect and admiration of fans and fellow musicians alike, cementing his legacy as one of Canada's greatest musical treasures.

This has led to moments that not only captured the hearts of those in attendance but also drew considerable media attention. These events have been among his most memorable live appearances:

  • December 4, 2000: On the eve of releasing Running Back Thru Canada, the Guess Who performed at Toronto's El Mocambo. Attendees were asked to contribute food items in exchange for their entry to the event, which resulted in over 4,000 pounds of donations. Burton Cummings and the band thrilled the intimate crowd, treating them to a night of nostalgic live rock music.

  • July 30, 2003: Burton Cummings rejoined The Guess Who in a monumental performance at the “Molson Canadian Rocks for Toronto” benefit to help revive the local economy after it was detrimentally impacted by SARS outbreaks. Playing before an audience of 450,000, this show was the largest outdoor ticketed event in Canadian history.

  • February 17, 2007: The centennial celebration of Winnipeg’s Burton Cummings Theatre for the Performing Arts (“The Burt”) was a commemoration and a fundraiser for the historic building. The facility, which was initially known as the Walker Theatre, was named after Cummings in 2002. This concert was his first in three years, and he thrilled fans with his headlining appearance.

  • April 2, 2016: At the Juno Awards in Calgary, Cummings performed with The Carpet Frogs to celebrate his induction into the Canadian Music Hall of Fame. The honor acknowledged his significant impact on the country’s rock and roll culture. It followed his previous Hall of Fame induction as part of The Guess Who, underscoring his success with the group and as a solo act.

  • August 16, 2019: Burton Cummings and Randy Bachman delivered a memorable rendition of "American Woman" at the Canadian National Exhibition (CNE).
