About Dark Star Orchestra
In 1997, guitarist John Kadlecik and keyboardist Scott Larned decided to bring a unique concept to life: recreating complete, historically accurate Grateful Dead setlists from start to finish. This idea, sparked by mutual friends and a shared vision, laid the foundation for what would become a remarkable tribute to one of rock’s most beloved bands.
Since their inaugural concert in Chicago over a quarter century ago, DSO has delivered well over 3,000 performances, each a meticulous reenactment of a specific Grateful Dead show. Their dedication to authenticity consistently allows them to accurately represent the distinct sound and spirit of each appearance, right down to the instruments played.
Dark Star Orchestra has evolved into a live music phenomenon with a devout following. With a robust touring schedule that continues to grow, the band aims to maintain the experience of the Dead for new generations. Their enduring appeal promises additional homage to the group that continues to inspire them every time they step on stage.
Live Moments That Made Headlines
Dark Star Orchestra might be classified as a cover band, but their concerts offer more than just a tribute; they provide a deep dive into the Grateful Dead's extensive catalog. The following have been among their most talked-about performances:
-
November 11, 1997: DSO played their first gig at Martyr's in Chicago in front of a crowd of around 40 people. It was the first show in a series of four, planned as an experiment, and they chose to revisit the Dead’s October 8, 1981 appearance at the Forum Theater in Denmark. By the fourth week, they were standing on stage in front of a sellout crowd of 400!
-
October 29, 2004: Dark Star Orchestra's 1,000th show unfolded at the Carolina Theatre in Greensboro, North Carolina. This landmark performance did not adhere to any single Grateful Dead setlist but, instead, was simply a celebration of the Dead's storied three-decade history. This special night was recorded and later released as a multi-CD set.
-
August 31–September 2, 2012: The debut of the Dark Star Jubilee marked a significant expansion of DSO’s influence. Each year they host and headlined an annual festival in the Legend Valley area of Thornville, Ohio, which attracts fans of the music and cultural ethos of the Grateful Dead as well as those with a desire to learn about the group and their genre.
-
July 5, 2021: At the picturesque Red Rocks Amphitheatre in Colorado, Dark Star Orchestra captivated a diverse audience ranging from longtime Deadheads to younger folks who simply appreciated the music. A guest appearance by former DSO member John Kadlecik, as well as standout renditions of "China Cat Sunflower" and "I Know You Rider," were highlights.
-
August 10, 2023: The Frederik Meijer Gardens & Sculpture Park in Michigan was the setting of a Dark Star Orchestra masterpiece that mixed Grateful Dead staples like "Cold Rain and Snow" with covers of Bob Dylan’s "Masters of War" and the Beatles’ "I Am the Walrus." The set closed with an energized rendition of "Gimme Some Lovin'" by the Spencer Davis Group.
