Notable Duquesne University Basketball Players
When you watch the action unfold at a game, you could be getting a glimpse of the next Hall of Famer or international hoops legend! The Duquesne athletic program has helped countless players hone their talents on the college courts. This list celebrates the alumni who successfully turned their NCAA accomplishments into professional sports careers:
-
Chuck Cooper (1946–1950): UPMC Cooper Fieldhouse is named after Chuck Cooper, who played with the Harlem Globetrotters right out of college, and then made history as the first African American drafted into the NBA by the Boston Celtics. Cooper’s contributions on and off the court were recognized with his posthumous induction into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 2019.
-
Sihugo "Si" Green (1953–1956): A two-time Consensus First-Team All-American in college, Si Green was selected first overall in 1956 by the Rochester Royals, now known as the Sacramento Kings. During his decade-long professional career, he spent time with the Hawks, Celtics, and Bullets, the franchise that would eventually become the Washington Wizards.
-
Norm Nixon (1973–1977): After four full years at Duquesne, Nixon was drafted in 1977, made the NBA All-Rookie First Team in 1978, and helped the Showtime Lakers win titles in 1980 and 1982. The two-time All-Star was considered one of the best point guards in the game, leading the league in total assists during his 1985–86 season with the Clippers before injuries took their toll.
-
Mike James (1994–1998): After college, James spent several seasons playing in Europe before signing with the Miami Heat as a free agent. He still managed to carve out a 13-year NBA career, lending his talents to 11 teams. He was a member of the 2004 Pistons championship team, and as a starter with the Raptors in 2005–06, averaged a career-high 20.3 points and 5.8 assists.
-
T.J. McConnell (2010–2012): While playing for Duquesne, McConnell was the 2011 Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Year. After finishing college at the University of Arizona, he participated in the NBA Summer League with the 76ers and earned a spot on the regular-season roster. He was playing with the Pacers in 2021, when he broke the NBA record for most steals in a half, and in January 2023, he recorded his third career triple-double.
