• Linton Townes (1978–1982): Townes was instrumental in leading the Dukes to their first NCAA Tournament. Drafted by the Portland Trail Blazers in 1982, he played for the Milwaukee Bucks, San Diego Clippers, and San Antonio Spurs before extending his career in Europe and Israel, demonstrating versatility and resilience throughout his 17-year professional career.

• Kennard Winchester (1984–1988): An All-CAA player in 1988, Winchester was chosen as JMU’s MVP for his contributions during the 1987–88 season. He went on to play for the Houston Rockets and NY Knicks before leaving the NBA for the CBA. After a few years in the international leagues, he found his calling as the boys’ basketball coach at East Chapel Hill High School.

• Charles Cooke (2012–2014): Cooke's accomplishments at James Madison and the University of Dayton had him projected as a second-round NBA Draft pick, but when he wasn’t selected, he took matters into his own hands. Following Summer League play with the Timberwolves, he ended up signing a contract with the Pelicans before moving on to the international leagues.
