The Golden Gophers Basketball Schedule

The Minnesota Golden Gophers Men's Basketball schedule features a mix of intriguing matchups, including traditional rivalries, intense conference battles, and encounters with prominent teams. These games present a variety of challenges and opportunities, showcasing the squad’s skills against a diverse array of opponents.

Key Conference Competitors

  • University of Wisconsin: The Badgers are among the Gophers' most storied rivals, with both teams consistently demonstrating strong competitiveness. Each showdown is part of the Border Battle, a cross-sport showdown for supremacy between Wisconsin and Minnesota. With regional bragging rights on the line, you never know what will happen!

  • University of Michigan: Encounters with the Wolverines pit Minnesota's speed against Michigan's versatility. These games, featuring two of the NCAA’s most storied programs, are not just about points but also about outsmarting and outplaying at every turn. As both teams vie for conference prominence, every minute is crucial to the Big Ten basketball narrative.

  • Indiana University Bloomington: The Hoosiers, with their iconic basketball legacy, bring a classic feel to games against the Gophers. These meetings are a meld of past and present, where history meets the heat of the moment, making each game a testament to enduring traditions. Will Indiana’s disciplined approach be any match for Minnesota’s high-scoring style?

  • Ohio State University: With wounds still healing from the “Basketbrawl” back in 1972, both the Gophers and Buckeyes are looking to the future. Ohio State represents a formidable hurdle for the Gophers, with each encounter being a potential turning point. These games are exhibitions of athleticism and tactical ingenuity, often becoming the talk of the conference.

  • University of Nebraska: Clashes with the Cornhuskers offer the Gophers a chance to assert their dominance in the Big Ten. While Minnesota’s assertive offensive presence can be intimidating, Nebraska remains committed to controlled, effective offensive execution. Expect these meetings to be underscored by strategic maneuvers and high-energy play.

Williams Arena

The Golden Gophers play at Williams Arena, also known as "The Barn" because of its curved roof and lofts. This historic venue has been a hub of sports and entertainment on the University of Minnesota campus in Minneapolis since 1928.

The raised floor design is unique among basketball arenas. The media, coaches, and teams sit up against the elevated court, which puts them at eye-level with players’ knees. The home team sits in front of Section 105, and Section 107 is behind the visiting team.

Most of the available seats are on bleachers. With the exception of Sections 109–113, a student area known as “The Barnyard”, the first 23 rows of the lower level have backs. On the second tier, if you want chair backs, you’ll mainly need to look in the first few rows.

Parking

Nearby lots include:

  • University Avenue Parking Ramp: 1926 University Ave SE

  • 1500 4th St. Parking Lot: 1500 S 4th Street

  • Huntington Bank Stadium Maroon Lot

Finding a place can be challenging on event days. Luckily, GoTickets allows you to reserve parking when you purchase your Minnesota Gophers basketball tickets. This feature helps to ensure a smooth arrival, so you can concentrate on getting to the venue and finding your seats!

Alternative Transportation

If you'd prefer to skip the parking hassle, explore alternative transportation options. The University offers free shuttles from various points on campus, including the St. Paul campus, before and after each game. You can also utilize Minneapolis Metro Transit buses and light rail, with stops within walking distance of The Barn.

Notable Minnesota Men's Basketball Players

When you watch college sports, you never know when you’ll witness the next All-Star or even a future legend! This list highlights the most successful players from the Minnesota Golden Gophers Men's Basketball program who made significant impacts in the NBA, showcasing their skills on the professional stage and earning notable accolades.

  • Mychal Thompson (1974–1978): Born in the Bahamas, Thompson became the first International player selected first in the draft. It was the Portland Trail Blazers who chose him in 1978, and he didn’t disappoint. He made the All-Rookie team and stuck with them for seven seasons. During the latter half of his stellar career, he won NBA championships with the Lakers in 1987 and 1988.

  • Kevin McHale (1976–1980): Chosen by the Boston Celtics as the third overall pick in 1980, the two-time Sixth Man of the Year spent his first six seasons backing up Cedric Maxwell and Larry Bird. He made the All-Star team once as a bench player and another six times after he became a starter. As if that’s not enough, he helped his team win three titles during his 13-year career.

  • Trent Tucker (1978–1982): Drafted by the New York Knicks in 1982, Tucker had a successful 11-year NBA career. His 1990 buzzer-beater that took a win away from Chicago was the catalyst for the “Trent Tucker Rule,” which negates shots with under 0.3 seconds left in a game. Ironically, he was traded to the Windy City in his final season and helped the Bulls win a championship.

  • Bobby Jackson (1995–1997): Chosen by the Seattle SuperSonics (now OKC Thunder) in the first round in 1997, Jackson played for various teams during his six-season NBA career. He is best known for his time with the Sacramento Kings, where he had a career-best 15.2 points per game and won the 2002–2003 Sixth Man of the Year award. Since retiring as a player, he has become a coach.

  • Kris Humphries (2003–2004): Selected by the Utah Jazz in the first round in 2004, Humphries played professionally for 13 seasons. He was renowned for his hustle, and he made valuable contributions to several teams. He hit his stride with the Nets between 2010 and 2013, averaging a double-double in points and rebounds in 2011 and ranked fifth for rebounds for two seasons.
