Notable UNM Basketball Players
The University of New Mexico athletic program has a rich history of cultivating talent, so you never know when the next legend will be on the court sporting a Lobos jersey. This list celebrates some of the most successful alumni who have graced the college courts before forging careers in the professional leagues:
-
Michael Cooper (1976–1978): Named First-Team All-American at UNM, Cooper played for the LA Lakers and served the squad during the Showtime Era, securing five NBA championships between 1980 and 1988. His defensive dominance earned him eight NBA All-Defensive Team selections and a Defensive Player of the Year award in 1987. After hanging up his sneakers, he transitioned to coaching. He was the 2000 WNBA Coach of the Year and led the WNBA's Los Angeles Sparks and the NBA D-League Albuquerque Thunderbirds to championships.
-
Luc Longley (1987–1991): A First-Team All-WAC pick at New Mexico, Longley was selected 7th overall by the Minnesota Timberwolves and became the first Australian in the NBA. He was subsequently traded to the Chicago Bulls, where he became the starting center in 1995 and won three championships between 1996 and 1998. He represented his home country at the Summer Olympic Games in Seoul (1988), Barcelona (1992), and Sydney (2000). After retiring as a player, he became an assistant coach of the Australian men's national basketball team (2013–2019).
-
Kenny Thomas (1995–1999): A powerhouse at New Mexico, Thomas was named First-Team All-WAC (1996, 1998, 1999), NABC Third-Team All-American (1998), and SN Second-Team All-American (1998). He was drafted in the first round, with Houston choosing him as the 22nd pick. In the NBA, he had a productive 11-season career, lending his talents as a power forward and center to the Rockets, 76ers, and Kings. He founded the Kenny Thomas Foundation to provide opportunities, including higher education, to community youth experiencing hardships.
-
Danny Granger (2001–2005): Granger earned two First-Team All-MWC nods at the University of New Mexico, where he also led the team in blocked shots, rebounding, and scoring during his junior and senior years. Selected 17th overall by the Indiana Pacers in 2005, he was named the NBA's Most Improved Player and an All-Star in 2009. He also had the honor of representing Turkey in the FIBA World Championship in 2010. Despite challenges due to injuries, his career was marked by prolific scoring, and he greatly contributed to his teams before retiring in 2015.
-
Tony Snell (2010–2013): Snell was a standout shooting guard/small forward at New Mexico, and in 2013, he made the Third-Team All-MWC (2013) and was named the MWC tournament MVP. That same year, he was the 20th overall pick, chosen by the Chicago Bulls. Known for his three-point shooting and defensive skills, he has made valuable contributions across several NBA teams, including the Hawks, who were helped by his game-winning three-point buzzer-beater during a 15-point fourth-quarter comeback over the Toronto Raptors in 2021.
