About Rick Springfield
Richard Lewis Springthorpe was born in Australia, where he became part of several bands as a teen. His most successful stint in the early days was as the frontman of the rock group Zoot from 1969 to 1971. In 1972, he released his solo debut, Beginnings, recorded in London, and the single "Speak to the Sky," reached the top ten in Australia and peaked at number 14 in the United States, setting the stage for an impressive run in the pop rock genre.
He signed with Columbia Records and got to work on his follow-up, Comic Book Heroes, but it did not achieve the same success. Instead, it was Springfield’s television work that began to garner attention. He wrote, acted, and performed songs for the ABC Saturday morning cartoon Mission: Magic! and was cast on major network prime-time series including The Six Million Dollar Man, The Rockford Files, Battlestar Galactica, Wonder Woman, The Incredible Hulk, and CHiPs.
In 1981, he landed a role as Noah Drake on General Hospital during the height of the show’s popularity. As millions of soap opera addicts tuned in, he had the opportunity to cash in on the exposure, reigniting his career with a new album—Working Class Dog. Springfield's biggest breakthrough came with the release of "Jessie's Girl,” a track that not only topped the US Billboard Charts but also earned him a Grammy Award for Best Male Rock Vocal Performance.
Soon, he was everywhere, gracing the covers of magazines, touring with his band, and making special appearances at events. Singles such as “I've Done Everything for You,” “Love Is Alright Tonite,” "Don't Talk to Strangers," and "Affair of the Heart," kept him on the charts for the better part of three years. In 1984, he starred in the feature film Hard to Hold and wrote the soundtrack. “Love Somebody,” its most well-known track, soared to number five on the Hot 100.
By the end of the ‘80s, his music began to fade, but Springfield continued to shine on the screen. He had left General Hospital when the demands of recording and touring made it impossible for him to continue, but to the delight of viewers, he resurrected the role of Dr. Noah Drake in the 21st century. He also starred in several films and television shows, never staying out of the public eye for long. His memoir Late, Late at Night made Rolling Stone’s list of "The 25 Greatest Rock Memoirs of All Time."
Springfield celebrated the 40th Anniversary of Working Class Dog in 2022 and continues to release new material at a highly prolific rate. He has never stopped recording and touring, and he has shared the stage with several other ‘80s sensations. Every appearance attracts legions of longtime fans, and they have introduced the rocker to new generations of listeners. An icon and an inspiration, he has proven to be a permanent fixture in the entertainment industry.
