The Rutgers Basketball Schedule

When choosing a game to attend, it’s important to identify the adversary most likely to deliver the type of competition that will exceed your expectations. The Rutgers basketball schedule is demanding, featuring Big Ten battles, historic rivalries, and contests with tough teams outside of the conference. They face high-scoring offenses, dominant defenses, and strategic exhibitions, and every game tests their ability to adjust and adapt, but there are always some opponents that stand out.

Key Scarlet Knights Competitors

  • Princeton Tigers: This rivalry with Princeton dates back to 1869. Today, it crosses conference boundaries, but that doesn’t matter to players and team supporters. Every encounter fuels fan fervor and showcases the contrasting styles of these New Jersey squads.

  • University of Michigan: The Wolverines bring a history of strong, strategic gameplay, contrasting with the Scarlet Knights' more dynamic approach. This pairing does a good job of highlighting the tactical nuances of basketball.

  • University of Maryland: Games between the Terrapins and the Scarlet Knights are big on strategy, often turning into on-court chess matches, where adaptability and spur-of-the-moment decisions play a crucial role in determining the outcome.

  • Seton Hall: The Garden State Hardwood Classic is legendary, with close proximity and passionate fan bases fueling the intensity. It’s a showdown for state supremacy, making every matchup between the Knights and the Pirates a must-watch event.

  • Ohio State Buckeyes: Prepare for a spectacle when these scarlet and grey juggernauts collide. The Buckeyes are athletic marvels, their high-flying dunks and lightning-quick cuts electrifying the crowd, and they can rain down three-pointers with sniper-like precision.

Jersey Mike’s Arena

Jersey Mike’s Arena is the home of the Rutgers Scarlet Knights men's basketball team. Located on the Livingston Campus of Rutgers University in Piscataway, the facility opened in 1977 and has a capacity of approximately 8,000.

The RAC (Rutgers Athletic Center), as it is commonly known, is feared by opponents, who have commented that the crowd feels more imposing here. The trapezoidal design of the building makes it seem as if spectators are looking down at the court from all sides, which can be intimidating for competitors.

RU Basketball Game Parking

Multiple lots surround Jersey Mike’s Arena, but spaces fill up fast during events, so arrive early. GoTickets gives you the chance to reserve parking passes when you buy your RU basketball tickets. We recommend taking advantage of this opportunity to help ensure a hassle-free arrival in Piscataway.

Alternative Transportation

Rutgers University operates a comprehensive bus system serving various campuses, including Piscataway. Shuttles offer a practical solution for students and visitors, facilitating easy access to the venue.

Notable Rutgers Basketball Players

The Rutgers University basketball program has seen several of its players make it to the big leagues. Here's a look at some of the alumni who have gone from the classrooms in Piscataway to pro courts across the country and around the world:

  • Bob Lloyd (1964–1967): Although he was drafted by the Detroit Pistons in 1967, Lloyd began his pro career in the ABA with the New Jersey Americans, better known now as the Brooklyn Nets. Beyond basketball, he served as chairman of the board for The V Foundation For Cancer Research, an organization founded by his friend and teammate Jim Valvano.

  • Phil Sellers (1972–1976): One of Rutgers' all-time greatest scorers, Sellers led the team to the 1976 Final Four and still holds the school’s records for scoring and rebounding. He was drafted by the Detroit Pistons in 1976 and played for a year before moving on to the Continental Basketball Association and BV Amstelveen in the Netherlands.

  • James Bailey (1975–1979): Drafted 6th overall by the Seattle SuperSonics (now OKC Thunder) in 1979, Bailey had a decade-long career in the NBA. Armed with the rebounding and shot-blocking skills he developed at Rutgers, he significantly contributed to several teams, including the Houston Rockets, New Jersey Nets, New York Knicks, and Phoenix Suns.

  • Roy Hinson (1979–1983): Selected 20th overall by the Cleveland Cavaliers, Hinson was a standout player renowned for his formidable presence in the paint. During the 1985–86 season, he played 82 games and averaged 19.6 ppg before being traded to the Philadelphia 76ers. He also had a short stint with the Nets before retiring in 1991.

  • Quincy Douby (2003–2006): A prolific scorer at Rutgers, Douby set records and left as one of the program's all-time greats. Selected 19th overall by the Sacramento Kings in 2006, he played three seasons in the NBA before leaving for international leagues. He was a TBL All-Star and Top Scorer, a two-time CBA All-Star, and was named the All-Star Game MVP in 2011.
