About The Drifters
In 1953, The Drifters made their debut, breaking onto the music scene as a group assembled by record executive Ahmet Ertegun to back emerging singer Clyde McPhatter. Their sound was meant to merge gospel with R&B, but it took some time (and several lineup shifts) to solidify the right sound. By that time, even McPhatter had left, with his share of the profits going to manager George Treadwell.
Treadwell hired Ben E. King as his lead vocalist, and The Drifters’ breakthrough hit, "There Goes My Baby," arrived in 1959. It revolutionized R&B, with its fusion of intricate rhythms. This set the tone for a period of innovation and influence, and as the decades rolled on, Ben E. King and The Drifters topped charts and set trends. Their hits included "Save the Last Dance for Me,” “This Magic Moment,” and "Under the Boardwalk."
In the ensuing years, over 60 vocalists have stepped up to the mics under The Drifters’ name, but despite significant changes, the band has maintained its distinctive sound. Their concerts have become celebrations of an enduring legacy, drawing fans eager to experience the harmonious delivery of iconic tunes. Their unwavering ability to pack houses is a testament to their enduring appeal.
