You never know when seeing an NCAA Division I game will give you a glimpse at a future legend! The University of Alabama at Birmingham’s athletic program has certainly done its share in preparing students for careers in professional sports. These are some of the Blazers basketball who went on to make their mark in the NBA and beyond:

  • Alan Ogg (1986–1990): A towering presence at 7’2” and 240 pounds, Ogg set the standard for defensive dominance at UAB with a total of 266 career blocks. He signed with the Miami Heat as a free agent and became a crowd favorite during his two seasons with the franchise before setting his sights on the Continental Basketball Association (CBA). By the time he retired in 2001, he had recorded appearances with clubs in Minnesota, Connecticut, Ohio, Mexico, and China.

  • Predrag Savovic (1997–1998): Savovic played professionally in Serbia before arriving in America to attend college in his twenties. At the University of Alabama at Birmingham, he was a two-time First-Team All-WAC honoree (2001, 2002) and the 2002 WAC tournament MVP.  He signed with the Denver Nuggets in 2002 and appeared in 27 games before heading back across the Atlantic to spend the final years of his career with Spirou Charleroi and Bilbao Basket.

  • Donnell Taylor (2003–2005): An agile shooting guard at UAB, Taylor found his way into the NBA as a free agent. Following a short stint with the Washington Wizards, he spent nearly a decade in the international leagues, playing for teams in Greece, Belgium, Israel, Bulgaria, and Italy. In 2012, his stellar performance with Pallacanestro Reggiana, averaging 18.6 points, 4.4 rebounds, and 2.3 assists per game, helped lead the club to an Italian league championship.
