History of the Greek Theatre

The story of the Greek Theatre begins with a Welsh-born mining magnate and one of the most consequential acts of philanthropy in Los Angeles history. In 1882, Colonel Griffith J. Griffith arrived in America seeking fortune in gold. He settled in Los Angeles, purchased the vast Los Feliz Rancho, and in 1896 donated 3,000 acres of it to the City of Los Angeles with instructions that the land be made "a place of recreation and rest for the masses, a resort for the rank and file, for the plain people." That gift became Griffith Park — today spanning over 4,200 acres and one of the largest urban parks in the country.

When Griffith died in 1919, his will set aside a $1 million trust with specific instructions: construct an observatory and an outdoor theater inspired by the temples of ancient Greece. The city broke ground in a natural canyon along Vermont Avenue in 1928, and on September 25, 1930, the Greek Theatre was officially dedicated — a striking amphitheater of Doric columns and tiered concrete seating carved into the hillside. But its early decades were turbulent. The theater was used sporadically in the 1930s, converted into military barracks during World War II, and fell into disrepair through the postwar years. It wasn't until the 1970s that the Greek found its true identity as a premier concert venue.

The renaissance was spectacular. On August 24, 1972, Neil Diamond recorded what would become the iconic Hot August Night double album on the Greek stage — a performance that helped define the venue for a generation. Elton John, Frank Sinatra, Aretha Franklin, Bruce Springsteen, The Doors, Carlos Santana, and countless other legends followed. A multi-million-dollar renovation in 2006 restored the original façade for the 75th anniversary and brought the venue to its present 5,900-seat capacity. In 2009, the Greek Theatre was designated Los Angeles Historic-Cultural Monument #942. The venue even made its mark on the silver screen — Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper performed "Shallow" on the Greek stage in the 2018 film A Star Is Born. Today, the Greek LA remains one of the most sought-after stages in music — an intimate, open-air temple in the hills where the canyon walls, the stars overhead, and the sound of live music converge into something you simply can't experience anywhere else. Grab your Greek Theatre tickets at GoTickets and see why artists and fans alike consider this one of the greatest venues on Earth.

The Greek Theatre Experience

What to Expect

A night at the Greek Theatre is an intimate, immersive concert experience that feels nothing like an arena show. With just 5,900 seats tucked into a natural hillside canyon, every spot offers a close connection to the stage. The venue's Greek Revival columns frame the performers, the canyon walls provide natural acoustics, and the open sky above is the only roof you need. Reserved seating sections include the Orchestra Pit, Orchestra Front, Orchestra Terrace, North and South Terraces, and upper sections — each offering a slightly different perspective on the stage. Concessions are available on-site, including beer, wine, cocktails, and a range of food options. The atmosphere is laid-back and quintessentially Los Angeles — arrive early, grab a drink, take in the scenery, and settle in for a night you won't forget.

What to Know Before You Go

The Greek Theatre is fully outdoors, so dress in layers — Los Angeles evenings in the hills can cool off after sunset, especially early and late in the season. Sunscreen is recommended for afternoon and early-evening arrivals. Gates typically open 90 minutes before showtime. No outside food or beverages are permitted. Cameras without detachable lenses are generally allowed, but professional photography equipment, audio recording devices, and video cameras are prohibited. Check the venue's website for event-specific policies before heading out. The Greek also hosts a limited number of comedy shows, film screenings, and special events throughout the season — it's not just concerts.

Parking & Transportation

Parking at the Greek Theatre is notoriously limited — and understanding your options ahead of time is essential. On-site lots include General Parking, Lot C, Lot G, Lot F (motorcycle), and Quick Park, all accessed off Vermont Avenue. All lots are credit card only, no cash. ADA-accessible parking is available in Lots B, C, and G, as well as behind the box office (very limited). On-site parking sells out in advance for popular shows, so purchase your pass the moment you buy your tickets.

For a more relaxed alternative, the Pony Ride Train Lot shuttle service offers off-site parking at 4400 Crystal Springs Drive in Griffith Park, with a round-trip shuttle running every 15–30 minutes to and from the venue. The LADOT DASH Observatory/Los Feliz bus also provides direct service to the Greek — connect via the Vermont/Sunset Metro B Line (Red Line) station. Post-show DASH buses depart 10 minutes after the show ends. Rideshare drop-off and pickup is in Lot C at Vermont and Commonwealth. Whatever your plan, arrive early — Vermont Avenue traffic on show nights is heavy, and the earlier you get there, the smoother your evening will be. Reserve your parking in advance through GoTickets.
