History of the Hollywood Bowl

The Hollywood Bowl sits in a natural depression in the Hollywood Hills that was known in the early 1900s as Daisy Dell — a bowl-shaped clearing in Bolton Canyon prized for its natural acoustic properties. Community concerts had been held informally in the dell for years before civic leaders decided to make it official. In 1919, the Theatre Arts Alliance, led by patron Christine Wetherill Stevenson, purchased 59 acres in the canyon for $47,500.
